Toronto’s Capybara releases free game Find Your Words about alternative communication

It's a dialogue-free experience focused on a non-speaking child who uses AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication)

Find Your Words game

Toronto-based indie developer Capybara Games, the team behind acclaimed games Grindstone and Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP, has released a free family-friendly game on Steam called Find Your Words.

It’s a short, cozy experience that focuses on a kid trying to discover their voice at a summer camp using symbols. As players explore the world, they’ll collect symbols for their communication binder, learn the unique meanings of different combinations of them and encounter new characters and activities.

Notably, your character doesn’t speak and instead interacts with NPCs using this binder in a form of communication known as AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication). AAC is used by people with speech and/or other language difficulties and can include gestures, printed materials and different kinds of technology. Co-creators Jon Maur and Vic Nguyen made the game after being inspired by their non-speaking kids’ journey and worked with consultants to make it.

While the game is available for free, Capybara is also selling a $5.99 Supporter Pack that includes the original soundtrack and a printable activity booklet. The developer says it also plans to make the game available in other languages later this year in addition to releasing on other platforms.

Capybara is also working on a premium game, Battle Vision Networkthat’s set to launch on PC later this year. The tactical colour-matching game was originally envisioned for both mobile and PC, but the former platform has been scrapped to focus on the latter.
