Apple highlights accessibility features for International Day of Peoples with Disabilities

In a new short, the company spotlights college students using devices like iPhone and iPad to navigate their disabilities

Apple has rolled out a new commercial for International Day of Peoples with Disabilities to promote accessibility features across its device catalogue.

Directed by Kim Gehrig (Apple’s “The Greatest” short), the new spot features disabled college students from around the world as they use Apple products like iPhone, iPad and Mac in their education. All the while, they’re singing and about how they’re not any more “remarkable” than anyone else. It’s a wholesome video highlighting how people with disabilites shouldn’t be othered; we’re all more alike than you might think.

Besides that important message, the ad does spotlight some important Apple accessibility features. For instance, a visually-impaired student named Cassidy uses Apple’s recently revamped Magnifier app to get a close-up view of the chalkboard on her MacBook using either a mounted iPhone (via the Continuity Camera feature) or attached USB cameras.

Meanwhile, blind Stanford computer scientist Bhavya conducts complex calculations by connecting a braille keyboard accessory to his iPad, which then fully integrates with the tablet. Elsewhere, Sophia is a deaf student who uses iPhone’s Sound Recognition to provide important notifications related to calls and other bits of audio.

More information on Apple’s accessibility features can be found on its website.
