Remember Scholastic when you were a kid? All of the classic children’s content we remember is available on a streaming app.
9 Story Media Group (a leading distributor of children’s media) and Future Today have partnered to launch the first-ever Scholastic-branded streaming app for kids. The app is currently available on Roku TV and Amazon Fire TV, with more platforms to come.
The media group describes the app as offering families a “Free, safe and trusted destination to enjoy beloved Scholastic programming on demand.”
Designed for children between the ages of 2-12 and their families, the app sports over 400 hours of content from Scholastic’s book library (remember the book fairs?), which include the original Clifford the Big Red Dog (seasons 1-2), The Magic School Bus (Original, seasons 1-4), Clifford’s Really Big Movie, The Baby-Sitters Club, and Animorphs. Additional titles from the 9 Story library include Garfield and Barney & Friends.
According to the press release, the app is part of Scholastic’s “360-degree strategy to reach children everywhere.”
The release of this new channel aimed at kids comes at a tough time for kids’ programming. Corus Media, which distributes a large portion of children’s programming in Canada, has struggled financially over the past few years. This July, Corus announced the shutdown of Disney XD, Disney JR, Nickelodeon, French channel La Chaîne Disney, and ABC Spark.
According to CTV News, Corus announced a loss attributable to shareholders of C$7.3 million in its third quarter, as the company’s revenue fell by 10 per cent, or C$33 million, compared to a year ago.
