New iPhone case changes old Lightning ports to USB-C

One less reason to replace your old phones

A new project has launched an iPhone case that swaps the Lightning ports on older iPhones to be compatible with Apple’s new USB-C cables.

“Years after my viral ‘World’s First USB-C iPhone’ modification, I’m back to revive the project. This time, I’m turning that one-off DIY mod into a real product you can own,” said Ken Pillonel in the description of his YouTube video demonstrating the entire process of making the case. Pillonel is an engineer who first went viral in 2021, creating the first USB-C iPhone and even beating out Apple to the idea. With his latest video, he’s turning that original mod from 2021 into a product that can allow old iPhones that still use Lightning ports to be compatible with new USB-C cables. “This isn’t just a hack anymore; it’s the biggest project I’ve ever done.”

In an interview with The Verge, Pillonel confirmed that the case would support MagSafe charging, data transfers to computers, CarPlay, and 9 volts (9V) fast charging. Anything outside of the listed features will require the case to be removed to use properly. The case itself also comes with a storage slot for an extra SIM card and a lanyard attachment.

For now, the case is only available in dark grey, but Pillonel has stated that more colours will be available in September with the release of batch three.

The case can be found here. Please note that all new orders will be placed for batch three, which is estimated to ship in mid-September.
