Last year, Google’s Pixel 9 Pro XL was my favourite phone; however, I might have to take back the crown if this issue becomes more prevalent; a Pixel 9 Pro owner reported on Reddit that the camera bar has detached from the back of the phone.
The owner says that when they bought the Pixel 9 Pro, they immediately put a screen protector and a case on it. Additionally, the 9 Pro has never been dropped or damaged, and they have only owned the device for three months. Despite their careful treatment, the camera bar is still separating from the rest of the phone, with a crack running along the upper part of the device.
Unfortunately, according to Android Police, the poster says that Google support will not replace the device. Of course, Google would blame user error; however, this isn’t the first instance of this happening. In October, another user reported having a similar issue with their Pixel 9 Pro. This user said they noticed their camera lenses fogging in the shower, and then when they took off the case, they noticed their camera bar separating from the back panel. This user said that the Pixel Store in New York City offered a replacement and said they would escalate the issue.
In both cases, the bar is separated from the upper edge. It’s unclear if Google is aware of this issue, but it is happening to different users in the same place, which is a cause for concern. Interestingly, the Reddit user deleted the post, and it’s unclear why.
I haven’t noticed any issues with my Pixel 9 Pro XL; however, in these cases, the problem was with the 9 Pro (the non-XL) version. This is also a cause for concern, as Google launched the 9 Pro a couple of months after the 9 Pro XL, which could mean that there was a rush to get these devices in working condition.
Hopefully, these are just coincidences, but with Google’s previous track record, it’s hard to say. MobileSyrup’s editor-in-chief, Jon Lamont, says that his Pixel 9 Pro isn’t suffering from this problem, so we’ll watch out and see what happens.
