Apple temporarily walks back notification summaries after outcry

The AI-generated summaries replaced notifications from news apps with made-up statements

Following frustration over Apple Intelligence notification summaries making mistakes, Apple is finally going to turn them off for some apps.

Spotted by 9to5Mac, the latest iOS 18.3 beta rolled out to developers with several changes to the AI-powered notification summaries. First, it temporarily disables notification summaries for apps in the ‘News & Entertainment’ category. Apple plans to re-enable summaries for apps in this category in the future after improving the experience.

Along with that, the beta introduces several other changes related to notification summaries. iOS 18.3 will make it more clear that notification summaries and other Apple Intelligence features are still in beta. Apple is adding a way to disable notification summaries for an app right from the Notification Centre or Lack Screen by swiping on the notification and tapping ‘Options.’ On the Lock Screen, notification summaries will now use italics to help differentiate them from regular notifications. And finally, Apple now warns people that summaries might contain errors in the Settings app.

All of these changes come after Apple faced backlash for errors in notification summaries on notifications from news publications. For example, the BBC wrote repeatedly about issues with Apple’s notification summaries, highlighting an instance where the AI-generated summaries changed a notification from the BBC News app to say that Luigi Mangione, the man arrested following the murder of healthcare insurance CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself when he had not.

It’s just another example of generative AI not living up to the hype set out by tech CEOs desperate for it to be the next big thing.
