Pope Francis is getting a new all-electric popemobile from Mercedes-Benz. The modified EV G-Wagon was unveiled on December 4, 2024, and takes the popemobile into the future.
Mercedes has been supplying the Vatican with cars for 94 years, and the main Popemobile has been a G-Class car for 45 years. That said, sometimes, in other countries, there are localized versions. For instance, when the Pope visited Canada in 1984, he was driven around in a modified GMC Sierra.

The new electric popemobile’s G-wagon base has been modified to go slower since the Pope usually travels at low speeds during his public appearances. On top of that, the usual G-class body has been modified to include the large viewing platform/seat where the Pope sits in the back.
Mercedes’ press release mentions that the rear seat can swivel and be moved up and down depending on what’s needed. Two other smaller seats in the rear accommodate additional passengers. The roof was also removed, but a separate rooftop can be fitted to the machine in case of rain. Notably, this roof has no sides and is not made of bullet-proof glass.
