Play Music subscribers can migrate collections, playlists to YouTube Music

The new service will be available for current Play Music subscribers at no extra cost

Good news for Google Play Music subscribers: YouTube’s head of music, T. Jay Fowler tweeted that they can migrate collections, playlists and more to the new YouTube Music.

The tweet follows after Google announced a revamp for its YouTube Music service. Users in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea were able to sign up for early access to the service starting on May 22nd. Google Canada also revealed last week that the service, along with YouTube Premium, will come to Canada this year.

Some users of the service are understandably worried, despite promises Play Music will remain unchanged.  The new YouTube Music appears to be designed as a more potent Spotify competitor. It features wider brand appeal, leverages YouTube’s collection of remixes, covers and live versions of songs and a new desktop client. While Google says nothing is changing, if YouTube Music is successful, it may be the end of Play Music.

Additionally, YouTube Music is getting a redesigned app for smartphones with a laid back style that relies on AI to help users sift through the overwhelming music options. For example, users can find songs even if they just know some lyrics or have a general description of the song.

Current Google Play Music subscribers will get access to YouTube Music and YouTube Premium too. The services will be bundled into their current subscription at no extra cost.

This is where Fowler’s tweet comes in. Play Music subscribers will also have their song collections, playlists and preferences migrated to YouTube. In Fowler’s words, “we’ll do the heavy lifting.”

YouTube Premium is the tech giant’s new YouTube Red. Premium features access to original content on YouTube along with ad-free video, downloads for offline playback and play in background.

YouTube Music will have a free, ad-supported option and a paid tier without ads for $9.99 CAD. YouTube Premium will be available for $11.99 as well.
