While it’s likely Canadian Galaxy S6 owners will still have to wait several more months before Android 7.1 arrives on their smartphone of choice, late last week Samsung achieved a significant milestone towards bringing Google’s latest mobile OS to its 2015 flagship.
On January 20th, the Wi-Fi Alliance, the Austin, Texas-based group that oversees the entire Wi-Fi standard, certified the Galaxy S6 (SM-G920V), running Android 7.0, as compliant with a variety of recent Wi-Fi technologies, including the 802.11ac standard.
With the Wi-Fi Alliance’s seal of approval, the S6’s Nougat update is now one step closer to making its way to users in Canada and across the globe. Of course, the update still has to pass through carrier certification, a process that takes a significant amount of time, no matter the carrier in question. It should also be noted that the S6 edge is not mentioned in the Wi-Fi Alliance’s certificate.
Last week, Samsung announced it plans to update the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, as well as some of the other smartphones it released in 2015, to Android 7.0 sometime in the first half of 2017. The full list of devices Samsung plans to update include the aforementioned S6 and S6 edge, as well as the Note 5, Galaxy Tab A with S Pen, Galaxy Tab S2 (LTE unlock), Galaxy A3, and Galaxy A8.
