MobileSyrup Poll: 19 percent of readers surveyed feel we need a distracted walking law

We asked the MobileSyrup community to respond over a 24 hour period on Twitter, Facebook (see note) and Google+ regarding their opinion on a distracted walking law potentially coming to their city.

Across our various polls, 1,385 community members participated and the results are in. Here’s what we found.

MobileSyrup
  • People need to stop it: 37.45 percent (103 votes)
  • Doesn’t bother me: 28.73 percent (79 votes)
  • We need a law to stop people; that’s the only way it’ll stop: 33.82 percent (93 votes)
Twitter
  • People need to stop it: 53 percent (480 votes)
  • Doesn’t bother me: 30 percent (271 votes)
  • We need a law to stop people; that’s the only way it’ll stop: 17 percent (154 votes)
Google+
  • People need to stop it: 35 percent (93 votes)
  • Doesn’t bother me: 37 percent (98 votes)
  • We need a law to stop people; that’s the only way it’ll stop: 5 percent (14 votes)

Distracted walking poll

As you can see from the tallied data, 49 percent or 676 of those surveyed would like to see people stop using their handheld devices while crossing city streets, 32 percent or 448 people surveyed indicated it doesn’t bother them, and 19 percent or 261 people surveyed say we need a law to stop people from distracted walking.

It will likely be some time before a law — if this ever even happens — is passed through a Canadian city’s municipal government regarding this contentious issue.

Note: Facebook does not allow for polls. It was used to gain conversational feedback on the topic.
