Facebook Moments broadens web access, launches support for full-res images

In a significant step towards becoming a full photo backup service, Facebook’s private photo-sharing app, Moments, is now allowing users to add photos to a web page that can be accessed and edited by anyone given the link — whether they’re connected on Facebook or not.

To access the new feature, which is perfect for photo galleries of large events where attendees might not be acquainted, just pull up an album in moments and click the ‘share’ link in the bottom right-hand corner, which will give you options to copy the link or send it directly using one of the supported apps.

At the top of the sharing options is a link to privacy settings. There users can choose whether the album should be open or closed to viewing and additions from non-members.

The other new addition to Moments is the ability to store full-resolution pictures on the service by starring a photo as a ‘favorite’ within 30 days of adding it. There’s no limit on the free storage, either, which compares favourably to Google Photos, which charges for storage above 15GB.

While there’s no technical limit, however, the practical limitation will be how many photos you can star before your finger gets tired.

Facebook Moments was launched in July 2015, but only made its way to Canada in May 2016. Thankfully, Canadians won’t trail the U.S. at such length this time around, with the updates now live for both Android and iOS.
