Nintendo and DeNA’s first smartphone games will be free-to-play

As many predicted, it looks like Nintendo’s first mobile titles will be completely free-to-play.

According to an interview with DeNA, the company with which Nintendo partnered for its new mobile venture, all upcoming DeNA titles place an emphasis on microtransactions.

“Games currently in the pipeline are all free to play,” said DeNA CEO Isao Moriyasu in a recent interview.

Those familiar with the modern mobile gaming space are likely aware of the word microtransactions, a term that’s become synonymous with games that constantly demand the player to make in-app purchases in order to move forward.

To be fair, we don’t know Nintendo and DeNA’s specific monetization plan for these upcoming titles. While unlikely, they could only feature harmless advertisements or cosmetic in-game items. However, if DeNA’s 60-plus existing mobile games are any indication, in-game currency is more likely.

Nintendo’s first mobile title is set to be a Mii chat app called Miimoto rather than a full-fledged gaming experience. Not much is known about Nintendo’s five other upcoming mobile titles, set to be released between early 2016 and some time in 2017. In the past, Nintendo has stated that each upcoming mobile game will be an experience built from the ground up with mobile in mind rather than a port of previously released titles.

Nintendo also plans to discuss its upcoming mobile/console hybrid device at next year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.
