Rogers was the first carrier in North America to release the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play back in April. This was the first certified PlayStation Android device but has now been joined by the Sony S1 tablet. The no-contract price has stayed the same at $549.99 but the 3-year has fluctuated from $99.99 at launch to a low $29.99 today.
Although Rogers, nor Sony Ericsson Canada, has given Canadian sales numbers, Dominic Neil-Dwyer, head of market development at Sony Ericsson, said in an interview stated that “We’re very pleased with how it’s going. It’s meeting expectations, but our expectations for the end of the year are a lot higher.”
When the Play was released it was one of the most powerful devices on the market, at the time packing a 4-inch display (480×854), Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread (now updated to 2.3.3) and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor with a Qualcomm Adreno 205 GPU. Nowadays there are devices that have increased specs, such as a 1.5GHz dual core processor, Android 2.3.4 – heading towards OS 4.0… so will there be an upgrade to the Xperia Play with a Xperia Play 2?
“Right now our big focus is on improving the experience of Xperia Play, bringing face chat, video calling with Skype, and movies and more software updates, because we can, and bringing better games,” Neil-Dwyer countered. “That’s our focus… We’re trying to create a new market. That’s our thrust right now, to build a great device. It will keep improving. We’ll keep upgrading the experience, the software and the games you get with it.”
