Just a few weeks ago Twitter announced plans to shut down Vine, its 6-second video platform at some point “in the coming months.” To compensate for Vine’s departure, however, Twitter has rolled out new features that allow users to more easily create and share live content within the social media platform.
“Twitter is about what’s happening in the world right now and live video is a powerful part of that conversation,” says Rory Capern, managing director of Twitter Canada. “We’ve watched Canadians embrace Periscope in recent years and we’ve now fully integrated it into the Twitter experience. Canadians can now stream video, make comments and share hearts through the Twitter app itself, which is a more seamless Periscope experience for both the broadcaster and the viewer.”
Periscope, a company Twitter purchased in 2014 for $100 million USD, is now integrated tighter within Twitter’s core app. With this new integration it seems Twitter is slowly moving its Periscope platform away from being a standalone app. Capern, however, says that there are “no changes to the Periscope app” coming in the near future, emphasizing that the app is still required for “advanced features.”
“Starting today, you can create and Tweet live video from the Twitter app, powered by Periscope. To go live, compose a Tweet, then tap ‘LIVE’ which brings you to pre-broadcast screen where you can frame your shot. When you’re ready, press ‘Go Live’ to start broadcasting,” writers Twitter in a blog post.
Similar to Periscope, you can comment and also show love for live broadcasts by sending a heart. Twitter notes that its 310 million users will see this option go live in the coming days.
