Free Wi-Fi now at Tim Hortons

Starbucks has it, so does McDonalds. Now Canada’s pride and joy Tim Horton’s has it, too. Free wireless. You can now sit with your computer, tablet or smartphone and get yourself free internet – courtesy of Bell. In a press release this morning Timmies states that over 2,000 locations have free Wi-Fi, and the rollout will expand to 90% of Canadian locations by September.

Roland Walton, COO of Tim Hortons, said “It’s all about convenience and making life easier for our guests. Free wireless Internet at Tim Hortons will help people stay connected on the road in more locations than anyone in Canada and is yet another great reason to visit one of our restaurants to enjoy a fresh cup of coffee.”

Time for a Timmy run…

Another nail in the Big 3′s crazy data charges corruption scheme…

      It’s Started!!
First They offer Wifi, by October after the release of the iphone 5, they will buy RIM when it drops to $4 and then they will offer you the
REAL “Roll up the RIM” – 8530 with a double double and a BBTorch with a box of doughnuts!

It’s about time for sure. I often wondered why it was that Tim Horton’s didn’t have wifi given how much of a staple they are for so many people, especially while travelling. Then again, maybe I’m used to travelling in the states where a lot of fast-food places have wifi. Now if only we could get broadband into rural homes this quickly.

Way too late to the game. But, better late than never. I’m happy that they did this, for it might make up for their lack of good coffee.

I switched from Tims to McDonalds. They have cheaper, and greater coffee, and free wifi.

    • GrapeApe

I wouldn’t call it great Bob!

  • Ted

If you thought getting a table in Tims was hard before, now it’ll be near impossible in Tims.
Tims imo are too small to allow folks to surf for hours on WiFi.
Of course this is just my opinion.

Its about time, considering their main rival Starbucks had it long time ago. That being said, which carrier is providing the free WiFi?

Now I have an excuse to go to Tim Hortons heh. Jks of course. I probably won’t set foot there since I prefer Starbucks choices of coffee plus other various drinks. Their food sucks though.

    • OgtheDim

      Their main rival is McDonalds.

  • Deborah

Excellent news. What about the US stores?

    • rvinceoh

Deborah, the Tim Horton’s locations here in Ohio have had free wifi for over a year now. I was wondering if they use their own satellite service. Anytime I have stopped at a Tim’s and used their wifi the home page always defaults to timhortons.ca

      RV

    • Wilbour

Every Tims I have been to in the USA has had free WiFi. Not sure why the Canadian ones have taken this long. As soon as a Tims pops up in the USA they have WiFi

  • Rio

I am curious as to if they partnered up with any of the providers or if its all them

Either way awesome news to some extent :)

  • STY

Cool, since I can hit them with a well thrown stone from my place…..

  • Informer

I don’t care I have 6GB wireless data for $30/mo. Who needs wifi?

  • Henaway

Did everyone miss “courtesy of Bell” in the article?? Same wifi as McDonald’s. Guess McCafe should have signed an exclusive on that! Whoops!

  • kingdrift

Yuck! Tim Hortons coffee is way overrated.

  • Jimmy

So can I torrent like hell? or do they throttle me ?

    • ns.dev

you have to buy tim”bits” of data ;)

  • Matt

People, read the article. It is Bell (just like Starbucks and McDs). I find it odd that it is always Bell.

    • ns.dev

Isn’t Bell the only ISP nation wide? I believe the other vary prov to prov.

    • GrapeApe

@ns , Bell’s not nationwide. It’s Eastern. Split East/West like Cable, with pockets here and there.

      Bell/Telus
      Roagers/Shaw

Then there’s smatterings of Sasktel, MBTel, Videotron, etc.

  • Allan

We’ve used free WiFi at Tim Horton’s in the States for the last couple of years. Nice to see the great Canadian Icon catching up with the US. It’s weird though how Bell has the deal with Tim’s, McD’s and Starbucks.

  • Jordan

Awesome now I can enjoy low quality food, frozen baked goods, overpriced dirt coffee, served to me by underpaid employees who are treated like dirt for pennies an hour AND get free wifi! A true Canadian icon

    • ridik

not trying to defend TH at all (I don’t like coffee in general) but how is Starbucks or McDonald’s in any way better? Well, maybe MD offers $1 coffee and it’s pretty good, but isn’t starbucks the most overrated and overpriced of all? I honestly don’t get how one can pay 3~5$ for a drink.

    • OgtheDim

ridik doesn’t buy beer in a bar it seems…

    • GrapeApe

Underpaid? Not in any Tim’s I’ve seen.
For the job title/position/qualifications, they are paid well compared to comparable jobs. And the food stacks up equally copared to similar.

Is it as good as XYZ meal someone had at a restaurant or at home, No, but it’s just like any other fast food, and better than many.

I don’t know what you expect for the price especially considering you think they underpay.

  • kman

Their fresh wifi is made in Calgary, then frozen and sent to stores where it is reheated and sold as “always fresh”.
I’m in timmies now reading breaking internet news, but for some reason its all dated July 3.
    Fresh!

  • bob

I’d just like to throw it out there that anyone putting milk & sugar in their coffee (especially a double double or triple triple) is basically drinking warm milk and sugar and really has no foundation for judging flavor.

    That being said, great news!

    • Big Ang

A sure sign of bad coffee is when everyone has to order it with Double sugar and Double cream AND IT STILL TASTES BURNT!

  • John

Old news, tims had it for a while.

  • Wind Is Better

I used the Wi-Fi last week. It was pretty easy to use and setup just had to provide some personal infromation. The speeds were good probably because I was the only one using it!

Also you have a guest option where you don’t provide any information but that will kick you out when your connection goes idle.

  • GENERAL WONG

This is to compete with Mcdo.

  • mattprime86

    Um..what?

I’ve been using wifi at Tim Hortons for over a year.

And i live in tiny a*s Barrie, Ontario

  • Plazmic

    @LazarBB13

    F***ing hilarious!!!!!

  • crunch204

as a former Bell employee, i have to say they are very aggresive when it comes to their “nationwide wifi network” they also provide it at chapters and you’ll see more to come

  • rony

canadian icon? own by u.s. company . hmmmm.

    • ns.dev

I believe it’s Canadian again – so they don’t have to pay as much for taxes.

  • Amar

After working at the dumpbin part time for 2 years it’s surprising they stopped being so ghetto and got wifi. Something they finally did right, employees better be allowed access there.

  • Shūji

I didn’t know there were Tim’s in the States, now I know I can get my favorite Tim’s meal in the States when I go next time.

  • Tim3tripp3r

I sure hope the wifi at th is better than mcd, cause the wifi at mcd sucks big time – at least in Port Alberni BC. All three locations have wifi slower than dialup and I have pointed this out to mcd management with no comments or change, if I was Bell I would be ashamed to put my name on something that slow. This is the year 2012 and not 1990 after all, I can go to a local franchise restaurant with “true” high speed wifi and eat for the same price as either mcd or th. Where do you think I spend my lunch $$$$$?

  • Terry Jeffery

Why is the wifi at Tim Horton slower then the coming ice age ?
