Virgin increasing Long Distance, Local Calling, Web Browsing & International Texting prices April 15th

Effective April 15th Virgin will be increasing the prices for a number of services across the board. These basically only impact those of you who are not on a plan but it’s always important to know what’s happening – just so you’re not shocked when you get your monthly bill.

Virgin posted this on their Customer Updates section on their site:

Long Distance and Local Calling Price Changes
Starting April 15, 2010, long distance charges on out-of-plan calls to Canada or the U.S. are changing from 30¢/minute to 35¢/minute in addition to your local by-the-minute rate. If you’re already hooked up to one of our Unlimited Long Distance Add-ons, then this pricing change won’t affect you. Also the local by-the-minute rate for out-of-plan calls will be changing from 30¢/minute to 35¢/minute. Please note that these changes will only impact Members who signed up before February 2, 2009. Anyone who joined after this date would already be paying these rates for out-of-plan local and long distance calls.

Web Browsing and International Texting Price Changes
Also on April 15, 2010, the charges for pay-per-use web browsing are changing from 5¢/page viewed to 5¢/kb (Kilobyte) of data. If you’re already hooked up to one of our Data Plans or Unlimited Mobile Web Browsing Add-ons, then this pricing change won’t affect you. Also, the price to send an international text is changing from 20 ¢ to 25¢ for each message sent. As always, receiving a text (from anywhere) is free.

If you’re going to be making long distance calls or surfing the web, then this is a great time to hook up an Unlimited Long Distance or Unlimited Mobile Web Browsing Add-on so that these pricing changes won’t affect you.

  2. How many price increases on various services has this been since Bell took over? It is now nothing more than Bell Mobility with a different marketing scheme.

  3. Does Richard Branson even know what’s going on with his brand now that Bell has full ownership?

Remember when he flew across Yonge/Dundas Square here in Toronto in a superhero outfit to save us Canadians from high prices and ridiculous fees?

It’s kind of ironic that in one story today, Mobile Syrup announces that competition is heating up in Canadian wireless, and then this story shortly thereafter.

It seems the only competition in Canada remains how quickly each provider can up their prices to match the latest increase of their competitors. I pray the Federal Government follows through on its Throne Speech notification to open up our telecommunications industry to foreign investment. It appears our only hope.

  4. Whats a local out of plan call?Local is local so why would you need a plan?
The web browsing was really bad enough at 5¢ per page but now at per kb on some sites that will be 25% to 150% increase.
Definatly not worth going with any of the incumbents at all.I’ll stick to my petrocan phone.

  5. So I go buy a new virgin prepaid phone and my rates are hiked 16% in the first few months. How is that fair? If I hiked my prices 16% I’d lose all my customers.

  6. The increase in web browsing is very nasty, beware. As a example, the facebook login page (a very light page) used to cost 5 cents to load but after April 15th it will cost $4.85. The page is about 97K at 5c/page = $4.85. If folks are unaware there will be thousand dollar bills involved here.

  8. extremely disapointed, have been with Virgin for just about 5 years and the prices have increased steadily since then. Hopefully when my contract is up I can switch to an unlimited plan with a new entrant. They also increased there rates for unlimited data and unlimited sms…
