Rogers One Rate roaming plans “shatter people’s perception”

Rogers officially announced their “One Rate” roaming plans today, we mentioned these in a post a few weeks back. Roaming is a big concern for wireless customers, mainly because our rates are incredibly high to begin with.Think about stepping outside your country and paying even more when hopping on another network. The “One Rate” plans allows you to use data in the U.S. like you do here in Canada (it all gets deducted from the same data bucket).

John Boynton, EVP of Marketing for Rogers said “Our customers have told us they are uncertain as to whether to use their smartphones while travelling in the United States… we are pleased to introduce breakthrough North American One Rate wireless data plans. These plans provide cost certainty to the frequent business traveller, Canadian snowbird or cross-border vacationer to the United States who wants to keep in touch with work, family and friends. These new offers shatter people’s perception of wireless data roaming when visiting the United States.”

Check out the plans below… do they shatter your perception of wireless data roaming?
$20 per month: Personal Email on BlackBerry (Canadian and U.S.)
$35 per month: Consumer or Small business BlackBerry (BIS) 500MB Canadian and U.S.
$35 per month: Consumer or Small business 500MB Canadian and U.S. Data Plan
$40 per month: Consumer or Small business BB (BIS) 1GB Canadian and U.S. Plan
$40 per month: Consumer or Small business 1GB Canadian and U.S. Data Plan
$45 per month: 500MB Canadian and U.S. Mobile Internet Flex Rate Plan

  1. about $10 more than I would expect nice to see Data Roaming getting cheaper though.

  3. So what’s Bell’s response? The public has known about this for a few weeks now, so Bell must have caught wind of it well before that.

  5. meh, sucks…
If youre a businessman, you dont really care, if you’re a regular user you overpay @ $40-$45 for data usage. Best response you’ll get is from WindMobile, because of their partnership with T-Mo.

  6. I am curious to see what happens with the 30$/6Gb special offer dataplan.

40$ per month for 6Gb North America sounds pretty good to me.

  8. I would rather not give up my 6gb for $30 deal to get roaming in the U.S. but I guess it’s good for a frequent traveler though I think you would have to travel there quite often to make it worthwhile versus the roaming add-on already offered by Rogers.

I’d rather have an unlocked phone and get a pay-as-you-go data plan.

    Or maybe pay WIND’s $0.10 per 25kb.

  9. Great news! Now time for Bell to match this. I am getting sick of $40+ data roaming fees…

  10. Another step in the right direction. I never travel, but neat none the less. We need reductions that target the average consumer, however.

  11. I contacted Fido this morning about this, and they have no plans to introduce similar plans.

  13. I travel to the US frequently

this will (and has already) saved me a Ton of money. Especially with GPS and email.

Thank you Wind for the competition

I like to ask everyone with the 6gb plan, tethering not withstanding, how many of you are even CLOSE to that 6gb limit.

  14. it’s not bad.

it normally cost $25 for 500MB within Canada so, for $35, you’ll get 500MB of data anywhere in US and Canada…

but i wonder how this work with grandfather data value packs…

  15. Magically they “forgot” to address the $30/6GB data plan. I would potentially be interested in paying an extra $10 for the months that I am travelling in the US, but there is no way I am giving up the 6 Gb.

Granted that most months I sit around 1 Gb, but there are months that I tether and if Rogers ever rolls out streaming TV I can see that adding another chunk of data to the monthly tally. Unless I could manage to drop my data consistently to under 500 Mb I am not giving up the plan.

  16. This is a ploy to get some of you to give up that $30/6GB data plan!

  17. hmm interesting…but what if you dare to travel outside of CANADA and USA?? What about travel to Euro zone or Africa?? Canadian rates (aka ROGERS et al) ARE A RIP OFF !! like most things in Canada, its all a monopoly that stifles competition!! Nanny state for the 21st century!! Bah to roaming! use a local pay phone and your laptop! oh and by the way, it doesnt matter how much you pre-pay for add-ons, they ALWAYS find some way to charge you MORE $$$$.

  18. @Lorne Cohen : Not often but on those occasions that I get close, it’s well worth keeping the plan if you think of the overages I would have had to pay!!

I use to have a temp office space that didn’t make sense to set up wired internet with Bell or Rogers so I tethered. And when you’re on a laptop, you go through MBs like nobodies business.

And it’s sort of attempting to future-proof too. What if my phone, in 3 months, could watch steaming t.v. or movies?

I would be a fool to give up my plan… except to go to WIND or maybe the new DAVE wireless.

  19. iPhone users screwed again.

I just got confirmation from Rogers that they are not currently offering an add-on for iPhone users who have the 6 gig plan. Rogers never seems to get that the people on that plan are the early adopters, they are also the customers that tend to spend the most money, and are the most vocal and loyal.

The interesting thing is, Rogers first instinct is always to screw or ignore iPhone users but they have always been quick to change that if there is a public outcry.

If you are on Twitter, send @ replies to @rogersbuzz that they need to take care of iPhone users.
