We’ve been tipped by several HTC Dream users today that for those who have yet to update the recent mandatory 911 upgrade that Rogers has essentially cut of their phone service. Apparently if you’re one of these people with the old OS and attempt to make an outgoing call you’ll be routed to Rogers customer service and asked to apply the update. Once you do Rogers Customer Service reps are saying your voice service will be re-activated but your data will take up to 24-hours to re-enable your service.
We’ve been informed by Rogers that “Once a customer speaks to a representative, they will not be redirected to Care again. The 24-hr re-enable of service refers to data… once the software update has been completed, data will be restored within 24hrs.”
Back on January 23rd (2-weeks ago) when Rogers sent out the 911 software fix they did state it was a mandatory fix: “A mandatory software update is now available for Rogers HTC Dream and Magic customers to ensure 911 calls can be completed on these devices. These customers need to go immediately to http://www.rogers.com/dreamsoftwareupdate or http://www.rogers.com/magicsoftwareupdate.”
Anyone else having challenges today?
(Thanks Richard!)

Including those that don’t run the Rogers firmware? They have been screwing with them for a while trying to force them to a broken and locked firmware while the 911 bug has actually been fixed for month…

I’m hoping this means they’re getting close to fixing this “911 issue” or whatever it is that they’re having with the Dream/Magic right now….
I’ve been wanting to buy the Magic from Rogers for about two weeks now (just after they pulled them from shelves, ugh)…. I don’t know how much longer I can hold out using a broken phone atm. I may have to grab an iPhone even though I was really looking for an Android phone. (Without a sliding keyboard ie. LG Eve)

@Brendan, while this may be a bit more expensive a route, why not buy the HTC Hero from Telus outright, unlock it, and then put in a Rogers SIM?

Yeah, sorry I guess I should have been more clear; I was hardware upgrading… While that is a valid option, unfortunately I don’t have the kind of cash to buy out a phone atm

@Brendan, you may want to hold out for the Sony Ericsson X10, you’ll will probably get a much better experience than the Magic

I managed to get data working on a non-robbers ROM. No thanks to them and many thanks to the large community online that wants to keep this phone open and not burdened by crappy out of date software.
Make no mistake, what rogers are doing is ILLEGAL (redirecting 911 calls, come on!).
My advice to Brendan is don’t bother with rogers at all, their support for Android is utterly disgusting. Wait a bit longer for one of the new networks to come to your area then get a Nexus One/Two. The rest of the world has had 1.6 since last fall, rogers is still on 1.5, even with their new “upgrade”.

The general theory now is that Rogers is basing whether the update was done Radio versions.
Dream users can follow this:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Upgrade_Rogers_Dream_Radio
Magic users can flash CursorSense as it is essentially based on the Rogers update – it also uses the 6.x radio from the update.

Keep in mind you will an engineering SPL to do either of these things.

We have had several guys in our office hit with this BS. This wide net Rogers is casting is affecting people that have WORKING ROMs that are not affected by the 911 issue.
What if I don’t want to run SenseUI? I am perfectly happy with my Eclair-based ROM and have WAY better performance with it.
This is bull…

So I want to get an Android phone, and I’ve been looking at other providers other than Rogers…. And maybe it’s just me, but I’m not seeing any alternatives to Rogers.
I took a look at MTS, Virgin and Telus. At least in my area (Manitoba) they don’t have any Android phones, or if they do they aren’t telling me about them.
I don’t know if it makes any difference, but the reason I was looking at the Magic was because I’m 21 months into my 36 month contract with Rogers, hence why I was going to try and get it on a hardware upgrade.
