Microsoft testing feature that could make it faster to send files to your phone

A new drag-and-drop option hidden in Windows 11 includes the ability to send files to a phone

Microsoft is testing a new Windows 11 sharing feature that could make it easier to share files to your phone.

Spotted by @phantomofearth on X, the new feature displays a tray for sharing files from a device. When a file is picked up and dragged toward the top of the screen, a drop-down tray will appear, listing different share options. The video displays the options to send to a linked phone, Outlook, the mail app, or a ‘More Options’ setting.

Dragging the file into the More Options setting will bring up a share menu, which includes recent shares, nearby devices, and a ‘share using’ menu which will bring up a list of different methods to send the file.

According to @phantomofearth, the feature only appears when the file is dragged from File Explorer or the device’s desktop. Dragging an app icon to the desktop will not trigger the feature.

The feature has a similar look to a mobile UI and other smartphone-sharing menus. From the video, the option looks to be easy to navigate, although users with a sensitive mouse or trackpad may find it difficult to operate.

The feature was found hidden in build 22635.4805, but according to DigitalTrends, it has not been found in any of Microsoft’s release notes. Currently, there are no known plans to add it to the general release of Windows 11.
