An Apple patent has shown off what the iPhone’s Action button could do in the future. The patent indicates that Apple could launch a device with multiple user-configurable Action buttons (also giving another purpose, volume up and down buttons) that could also come to iPhones and Macs.
Patently Apple spotted the patent, showcasing that these buttons could provide tactile feedback and allow users to assign various features, like using the volume-down button to call your favourite contact.
Patents don’t always come to fruition, but it does seem like Apple is moving in this direction. The iPhone 16 Pro series offers a Camera Control button that performs multiple actions within the iPhone Camera app.
It’s unclear when Apple will launch this device, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the iPhone 18 series has more configurable button options.
