A new report from Ookla shows that the iPhone 16 series phones use the new Snapdragon X75 5G modem and outperform the competition in speed tests.
In Canada, the iPhone 16 series downloads at an average of 182Mbps, while the Samsung S24 hits an average of 155Mbps. Both phones are much more comparable on the upload front, with just over 19Mbps upload averages.
In the U.S., the speeds are higher, and the iPhone 16 series comes out on top again with an average speed of 324Mbps. The S24 series hits 287Mbps. Once again, the uploads are higher than in Canada and very close in speeds. The iPhone 16 series hits 15Mbps, and the S24 series goes up to 16Mbps.
Overall in Canada, the iPhone 16 series seems like a solid jump over the competition, with the iPhone 14 hitting an average of 124Mbps and the iPhone 15 getting average speeds of 137Mbps. So, while the iPhone 16 series is faster, I wouldn’t consider it a big enough increase in speed to really constitute a buying decision since there isn’t much on a phone where the extra 45Mbps will make a huge difference.
That being said, it is nice to see the iPhone getting meaningful gains each year, even in the less noticeable departments like the modem.
