28 Years Later will be the biggest movie ever shot on iPhone: report

Director Danny Boyle, writer Alex Garland and star Cillian Murphy have all reunited for the highly-anticipated horror sequel

Next year’s highly anticipated 28 Years Later was shot on iPhone 15 Pro, according to Wired.

After a single Just Jared paparazzi photo from the set in July suggested the use of unorthodox camera setups, Wired is now citing sources that a series of “adapted” iPhone 15 Pro units were indeed housed within them.

It’s certainly an interesting creative choice for the film, which is a sequel to 2002’s post-apocalyptic horror classic 28 Days Later. 28 Years Later reunites director Danny Boyle with writer Alex Garland and original star Cillian Murphy (fresh off his Oscar win for Oppenheimer). Also re-teaming with Boyle is frequent collaborator Anthony Dod Mantle, who was the cinematographer on 28 Days Later and even took home an Oscar for his work on the English director’s Slumdog Millionaire.

But what’s also notable is that the use of the iPhone 15 Pro makes 28 Years Later the biggest-ever film to be shot on an iPhone, given its estimated budget of $75 million USD (about $101 million CAD). Generally, movies that have been shot on iPhone, including Sean Baker’s 2015 comedy-drama Tangerine (iPhone 5S) and Steven Soderbergh’s 2018 psychological thriller Unsane (iPhone 7 Plus) and 2019 sports drama High Flying Bird (iPhone 8), have been much smaller in scope. For context, these all had budgets of $2 million USD (about $2.7 million CAD) or less, which were, clearly, significantly less than 28 Years Later.

Therefore, it will be especially interesting to see what Boyle, Dod Mantle and co. do with the iPhone 15 Pro on a much larger budget. 28 Years Later is set to hit theatres on June 20th, 2025 and co-star Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Ralph Fiennes (Schindler’s List) and Jack O’Connell (Skins). It’s intended to be the first in a new trilogy, the second of which, 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, will be helmed by Nia DaCosta (2021’s Candyman), written by Garland and co-produced by Garland and Boyle.
