If you bought a Nike+ FuelBand in hopes that the company would create an Android app to sync your data to, you’re out of luck. According to the company’s support team on Twitter, there are no current plans to sync FuelBand data with Android devices as users currently can with iOS.
To deliver the best experience for all Nike+ FuelBand users, we are focusing on the FuelBand experience across iOS and nikeplus.com, where you can sync your activity, set new goals, and connect with friends. At this time, we are not working on an Android version of the mobile app.
‘This goes against what most other companies are doing with their fitness bands/watches. Fitbit has announced extensive Android support with its upcoming Flex band, though it requires Bluetooth 4.0 which is only included on more recent devices. The Pebble Smart Watch can also link up with fitness apps via Bluetooth. Accessory manufacturers are increasingly including Android support in their devices, so it strikes us as quite narrow-minded of Nike to make this decision. It could be, however, that the company has a mature and loyal relationship with Apple going back to iOS integration of its Nike+ system, and doesn’t want to jeopardize it by committing to Android.
Either way, I won’t be buying a FuelBand as a result of this.
