Yesterday a new rumour sprouted that once again targeted RIM, stating they have plans to potentially split their business up into two companies – handset and messaging network. We reached out to RIM this morning for a comment and here’s what they said:
“RIM has hired advisers to help the Company examine ways to leverage the BlackBerry platform through partnerships, licensing opportunities and strategic business model alternatives. As Thorsten said on the Company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, ‘We believe the best way to drive value for our stakeholders is to execute on our plan to turn the company around.’ This remains true.”
So not denying the rumour, just confirming that they’re focused on turning the company around. Part of the plan is to deliver the BlackBerry 10 OS and devices to the world by “the latter part of 2012.” RIM currently has over 78 million BlackBerry subscribers, 59 million BBM users and at the end of Q1 had about $2.1 billion in cash.
Certainly exciting times happening at RIM.
