More info on the upcoming Rogers “Smartphone Lite” category

Rogers will be unleashing a new “Smartphone Lite” category soon. We found out yesterday that devices with this label will be affordable smartphones. Today Rogers employees have started their training and more information has been made available to us:

“Smartphone Lite devices are smartphones that will be available on voice-only plans for maximum device subsidy. These devices are best paired with the $10/100MB data plan. Smartphone Lite devices are perfect for those customers who want a full-featured smartphone that has improved and faster browsing & apps experience with upgraded email and calendar functionality relative to QMDs, but these customers primarily see themselves using voice and messaging services with occasional data use. Smartphone Lite devices run on the smartphone platforms (Android, Symbian, etc) and are perfect for those customers who want all of these great features at an affordable price.”

Looks like there’ll be the Nokia X7 and some Android devices too. As stated above the “Smartphone Lite” is targeted for those who talk a great deal and might occasionally want to check email, surf the web. The “low-cost” data plan from the internal doc yesterday was the $10/100MB, this can give you about 400 emails a month or surf about 600 webpages and will only be available on voice only phones that run Symbian or Android, not BlackBerry.

More soon!
