Old-school hockey cards have a digital make-over from Topps with a new app-based trading card game called NHL SKATE: Hockey Card Trader.
The app launched today on the iTunes App Store and Google Play.
NHL SKATE has exclusive digital card designs, and full motion video clips from select NHL games. Users can get video cards through the Topps FOCUS set that show the moments leading up to the trading card images.
Users can set an ultimate lineup, open new packs for free and compete in live contests with other NHL fans for in-app rewards. NHL SKATE’s scoring system lets users play in real time, predict changes and swap cards while watching NHL games. Users can trade up to 18 cards in a deal, and find trading partners through filtered searches and trader ratings.
The trading card game features 30 NHL teams and over 3,000 cards with new cards released daily based on performances of players. In addition, the app will have artwork cards, designs and digital versions of memorabilia and autographs.
Topps, a longstanding sports card and candy company, collaborated with the NHL, BAMTech and NHLPA to create the app.
This comes after the company hired Jeremy Strauser, with a background in gaming work at companies like Electronic Arts and Bee Cave Games, in 2015 as their general manager of digital to oversee their strategy and expand their app division.
