Sun Life Financial executive makes the jump to digital health startup League

As of late, Toronto has seen swarms of top executives at veteran companies leave their roles to start new journeys at smaller, more nimble, up and coming startups.

The latest of these is Sun Life Financial’s Lori Casselman, who will shortly start her new role as League’s Chief Health Officer. League is a digital health insurance startup that allows employers to create customized health insurance plans for their employees.

According to a statement sent to MobileSyrup, Casselman is well versed in “physical, mental and financial well-being.” She previously worked for another health and wellness startup, Buffet & Company, which was acquired by Sun Life Financial.

“The healthcare system needs a multidisciplinary, consumer-oriented approach to address prevention, education and treatment opportunities,” said Casselman in a statement.

“Technology can enable and empower consumers to understand and manage their own health in ways we have yet to imagine, and there is tremendous potential to change the traditional landscape of health benefits. I am so inspired by what League is building and what they’re aiming to achieve,” she continued.

While at Sun Life Financial, Casselman has held several roles in group Benefits organization. Recently, several major corporations have relinquished senior executives to more innovative companies.

Canada’s own QNX (acquired by BlackBerry in 2010) lost its founder Dan Dodge to Apple’s autonomous car division. Twitter executive Kristine Stewart also decided the join the Canadian-based TheScore’s board of directors.

Casselman has over 20 years of experience in health and insurance related roles including serving on several advisory boards such as the Sanofi-Aventis Healthcare Survey, Health, Work & Wellness Conference, and Get Active Toronto.

“Lori is the perfect addition to our team and we’re excited to have someone with her experience help us further develop our professional network and support the creation of new programs,” said Michael Serbinis, CEO of League in a statement.

“Her background, coupled with her unique point of view on health benefits, makes her an amazing addition to the League portfolio. We’re lucky to have her.”
