Samsung’s rugged version of the Galaxy S6 rumoured to have 5.5-inch display

Galaxy S6 hands-on

This might have been the first year that Samsung has released two versions of its new Galaxy S at launch, but the company is no stranger to tweaking its flagship phone for different audiences. Over the years we’ve seen Active, Sport, Zoom, and Mini versions of the Galaxy S that target different types of people. No surprise then that Samsung would continue that for the S6.

Mobifo this week pointed to a user agent profile on Samsung’s own website for a device with the model number SM-G890A, which is very close to SM-G870A, the model number for the Galaxy S5 Active on AT&T. Samsung’s site states that this phone will have a 1440×2560 display but doesn’t tell us much else about the device. However, Indian import and export site Zauba has shed a little more light on the hardware powering this new and as-yet-unannounced Samsung device.

This phone sounds very similar to the S6 in terms of hardware, though that’s no surprise given the history of these modified Galaxy S phones. Aside from a change in display size that boosts the panel to 5.5 inches, the phone will feature the same Exynos 7420 chipset, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and 16MP camera as the S6 and S6 edge.

Of course, what really matters about this device (if it is the S6 Active) is what’s on the outside. The Galaxy S6 (pictured above) is notable in that it is the most “premium” Galaxy S phone that Samsung has ever made. Though the Gorilla Glass 4 back is no doubt durable, the phone isn’t waterproof or dust-proof, which is the very least people expect from a rugged phone. The company will have to sacrifice the sleek design if it wants to build a rugged version of the S6, but that leaves us wondering what a rugged version of the S6 would look like.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge don’t launch until April 10th, so don’t expect the Active before then or even soon after. The S5 Active didn’t launch until June in the United States (the S5 was released April 11th) and it didn’t come to Canada until October. If you’re waiting for the rugged S6, get comfy.
