Nintendo has released the first trailer for its highly-anticipated sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. MovieThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Revealed during a brief Nintendo Direct on Wednesday morning, the trailer features a miniaturized Bowser (Jack Black) being held captive in a castle by Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day). The trailer also sets up the titular galaxy-spanning adventure that includes Bowser Jr. attempting to rescue his dad and fan-favourite Mario character Rosalina fighting a giant robot.

On top of the trailer, Nintendo confirmed that Bowser Jr. is voiced by director-actor Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems), while Rosalina will be played by Oscar winner Brie Larson (Room).

The sequel is once again animated by Universal-owned Illumination (Despicable Me series) and helmed by the directors of the first film, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. It’s set to open in theatres worldwide on April 3, 2026.

Interestingly, there’s been no confirmation yet regarding the return of Donkey Kong, who was voiced by Vancouver’s own Seth Rogen in the first film. That said, a Nintendo filing from earlier this year suggested that a spin-off film starring Donkey Kong might be in the works, so it’s possible that they’re saving the cinematic return of gaming’s most iconic ape for that.

In any event, we don’t have to wait much longer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. It’s also worth noting that Nintendo just released Switch and Switch 2 remasters of the two Super Mario Galaxy games from the Wii, which can also help tide you over until the new film.
