Tesla offers $1,000 off for teachers, students and first responders

Kind of a weird mix of people and a small discount, but hey, when your CEO is melting down online, you gotta do something

If you didn’t want to buy a Tesla, maybe this new deal will change your mind. Canadian teachers, students, and first responders who can prove their credentials through the ID.me website will qualify for $1,000 off any new Tesla.

It should be noted that this can stack with government incentives, but it won’t work with other Tesla-offered discounts. The discount began in the U.S., but is now expanding to Canada. At the time of writing, the cheapest Model 3 on Tesla’s website within 200km of Toronto is $67,000.

If you think you might be eligible for this discount, you can check out the ID.me site for a breakdown of what jobs this applies to specifically. For instance, ambulance drivers and court bailiffs don’t count.

What’s funny to me is that this whole discount is titled ‘For everyday Canadian Heroes,’ which I think is fair for first responders and teachers, but it’s a little comical that students are just lumped in as well. I can say for certain that I did not feel like a hero smoking weed in my university dorms.

All of that being said, I don’t think this limited $1,000 discount is going to move the needle much for the company. Elon Musk’s Canadian reputation is pretty much shot, and without a federal incentive, it seems like EV sales are down across the board in a lot of places.
