The Switch just became Nintendo’s best-selling system of all time

Having surpassed the DS, it's now second only to Sony's PS2 overall

The original Nintendo Switch has surpassed the Nintendo DS as Nintendo’s best-selling gaming system of all time.

The announcement came as part of the company’s Q3 earnings report. In it, Nintendo confirmed that the Switch reached 155.37 million units sold as of December 31, 2025, just edging out the DS at 154.02 million units.

To put this number into context, this makes the Switch the second best-selling gaming system of all time, behind only Sony’s PS2 at around 160 million consoles sold. It’s worth noting that Nintendo sold over 10 million original Switch consoles in its 2025 fiscal year, even with the system being nearly 10 years old and its similarly popular successor, the Switch 2, releasing last June. Therefore, it’s very likely that the original Switch will eventually pass the PS2, given that it only needs to move about five million more units.

Elsewhere in its latest earnings release, Nintendo also confirmed that the Switch 2 is still its fastest-selling console to date. So far, the company has sold 17.37 million Switch 2 units, which is 10 million ahead of the Switch in the same timeframe. It should be noted that the original Switch was in short supply for months after launch, while Nintendo notably secured much more stock for the Switch 2, enabling many people to just walk into stores and buy one.

Nintendo also revealed sales data for some Switch 2 games, including Mario Kart World (14.03 million), Donkey Kong Bananza (4.25 million) and Pokémon Legends: Z-A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (3.89 million). Notably, Nintendo didn’t provide any information on Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, leading some to believe it has underperformed.

With all of that said, there’s been continued speculation that Nintendo will raise the price of the Switch 2 amid wider economic headwinds that include increasing memory costs. While the company has maintained that it has no current plans to do so, some analysts expect it to happen at some point this year. In 2025, Nintendo raised prices of original Switch products, while competitors PlayStation and Xbox did the same with their respective consoles.

For now, all we know is that several notable games are confirmed to be coming to Switch 2 this year. MobileSyrup recently previewed some of them, like Mario Tennis Fever, while others, like The Duskbloods, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave and Splatoon Raiders, remain more of a mystery.
