Freedom Mobile calls out Bell, Telus, Rogers for high roaming rates

The Big Three telecoms have been slowly raising roaming rates for years

Freedom Mobile has started a Change.org petition calling out Bell, Rogers and Telus for not only having high roaming rates when Canadians travel but also for shrugging off the CRTC when it demanded real change to roaming by November 4th.

At the hearing, the Big Three telecoms claimed that they’d already reduced roaming rates and told the CRTC of their future plans to reduce them even further. However, a lot of those plans were redacted so we’re unable to tell if they’ll actually help Canadians or not.

One of the main points that all three of the major telecoms pointed to was the availability of plans that include Canada/U.S. data. However, compared to Freedom, those plans are quite pricey and wouldn’t really help the average Canadian family save any money on vacation. They would likely equate to more money being spent on their phone bill over the course of a year.

You can read more about the responses here.

Freedom has claimed that these rates are inflexible and unfair. It asked Canadians to sign their petition to send a message to the Big Three that Canadians are sick and tired of paying high roaming rates. As of the time of writing, over 800 people have signed the petition.
