APK teardown of Google’s Android Messages app reveals account linking and GIF browser

Android Messages

Google has rolled out an update to its Android Messages app.

The app, now at version 3.1, didn’t receive any visual or functional changes, but an Android application package (APK) teardown reveals new features Google might soon be pushing through to its messaging app.

The teardown performed by Android Police, shows off an upcoming web chat interface for Android Messages. It seems that Google has changed the name of the interface from ‘Messages for Web’ to ‘Android Messages for web.’

Further, the teardown revealed that an update to the Android Messages app will let users connect the app to their Google accounts. According to the data, a single line of code mentions that the feature is for “a more personalized experience.”Android Police guesses the reason behind this feature could likely be related to Google-enhanced Rich Communication Services (RCS) — RCS is a SMS protocol that adds features likes read receipts and high-resolution photo sharing.

Even in Canada Google is increasing its RCS efforts and partnering with carriers Rogers and Freedom Mobile. It could also be related to Smart Replies, as well as the ability to save messages.

Lastly, the teardown revealed that Google is working on adding GIF browser support to its Android Messages app. This is similar to Facebook Messenger and Google’s own Gboard app, allowing users to search for GIFs by typing exactly what they’re looking for.

It’s unknown when any of these features will hit Android Messages, though with Google I/O 2018 around the corner, I wouldn’t be surprised if Google mentions some of these features.

Android Messages is free to download via the Google Play Store.
