The CRTC has published its annual Do Not Call List (DNCL) report, revealing that 214,822 numbers were registered between 2016 and 2017.
According to the CRTC, a total of 13,401,407 numbers were registered to the DNCL since 2008.
The province with the most numbers currently registered is Ontario, with 5,655,563 numbers, while Canada’s northern territories total 13,744 registrations altogether.
Canadians filed 79,417 complaints between 2016 and 2017 with Bell, the country’s DNCL operator.
Ontario once again tops the list of complaints, with 52 percent of all complaints coming from the province.
Interesting to note is that 3,628 telemarketers registered with Bell between 2016 and 2017, an increase of 489 percent from the previous year.
The CRTC also released numbers addressed groups or companies that violated the DNCL.
Raid Inc. was issued a $500,000 CAD penalty for misusing the DNCL — the highest penalty issued this year. Robert Gendron, operating as Dynique Restoration and Victoria Restoration was issued the lowest penalty this year — $18,000.
Several home improvement companies were issued violations. Just Energy Corp. was issued a $240,000 penalty, while Natures Carpet Cleaning Ltd. was issued a $12,000 penalty.
Sirium XM Canada Inc. received a $650,000 for violating the CRTC’s robocall rules. The satellite radio company paid this fee to the Receiver General of Canada.
According to the CRTC, one-third of Canadians get multiple telemarketing calls each week, while roughly half of these people are aware of the DNCL and robocall rules.
