Back at the end of 2016, Vancouver-based Investel Capital Corp acquired British Columbia rural network operator RuralCom Corp. On Monday, the investment firm announced the closing of its deal to acquire RuralCom, as well as the fact that RuralCom will now be known as TNW Wireless.
In relaunching RuralCom’s 850 MHz network, TNW has restored power to all of the carrier’s existing cellular sites and added one of its own towers to the mix. As result, cellular users in various rural communities in northern British Columbia and the Yukon territories, including two towns on the Haida Gwaii archipelago and Whitehorse, can start using the network again.
Moving forward, TNW Wireless plans to expand its coverage area to the entirety of the Haida Gwaii archipelago, as well as 1,700km along the Alaska highway from northern British Columbia to the Alaskan border.
Investel, TNW’s parent company, has recently been in the news for launching a patent case against Snapchat creator Snap over its use of location-based geofilters.
More to come…
