Sony announced today that global sales of its PlayStation 4 video game console have surpassed 50 million units.
The announcement comes after the Japanese electronics giant announced 40 million PlayStation 4 sales in May of this year. For the sake of comparison, the PlayStation 3 was on sale for four-and-a-half years before it hit the 50 million unit milestone.
It also means the company has sold approximately twice as many PlayStation 4 consoles as Microsoft has Xbox One consoles. Microsoft’s console has sold approximately 23 million units worldwide.
The number includes the launch model, as well as the recently released “slim” and Pro models. Sony does not provide a sales breakdown of individual SKUs.
“We’re truly delighted that the PS4 community continues to flourish since launch three years ago,” said Andrew House, president and global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, in a press release.
Sony also announced it has sold 369.6 million PS4 games to date.
