The CRTC recently reached out to Canadian carriers asking for their assistance in combating spam calls, giving them 90 days to come up with practices for blocking “blatantly illegitimate calls” at a network level.
To further curb spam calling, the CRTC has signed a memorandum of understanding with the FCC in the United States to block robocalls and spoofing. The two organizations will work together to educate and share knowledge on the “growing threat that unwanted robocalls.”
Steven Harroun, CRTC Chief Compliance and Enforcement Officer, said, “This agreement reiterates the long-standing cooperation between the FCC and CRTC, and strengthens our efforts to protect Canadians. Working in close partnership with the FCC, we will enhance our expertise to investigate those who disregard our rules, while increasing our effectiveness in reducing unlawful and illegitimate telecommunications.”
The CRTC launched the National Do Not Call List (DNCL) on September 30th, 2008 with the of goal of preventing telemarketers from calling Canadians. To-date, over 13 million numbers have been registered.
