CRTC seeking feedback from Canadians about the Wireless Code of Conduct

The CRTC is seeking feedback from Canadians on the Wireless Code of Conduct.

The wireless code was established in 2013 to better inform consumers of the rights and obligations contained in wireless contracts.

Since going live, the Code has mandated many industry-wide changes, including the implementation of regulations that state all smartphones purchased on subsidy must be paid off within 24 months, and that carriers are now required to inform users when they’re being billed over $50 in out of bundle data.

When the CRTC established the Code, the institution also declared its intention to review the regulations within three years to ensure they are effective, specifically in “clarity of contracts, ensures cancellation fees are clearly explained and limits the risk of bill shock.”

Now, three years later, Jean-Pierre Blais, Chairman of the CRTC, says, “The Wireless Code has helped Canadians better understand their wireless services and make informed choices. While we have been tracking its effectiveness, we want to hear directly from Canadians about their experiences with their service providers and the Code. This will help ensure that it continues to empower Canadians in an ever-changing wireless marketplace.”

If you want to get involved and potentially shape changes to the Code, the CRTC wants to hear from you and is open to comments until September 26th, 2016. The CRTC notes Canadians can submit views either online, mail, fax, or participate in an online forum from September 13th to 26th, 2016.
