Samsung announces IoT platform, Knox expansion and Connect Auto beta at SDC 2016

Samsung announced several new products and features today at the 2016 Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) in San Francisco, including a new IoT platform, Knox enterprise expansion and the Connect Auto beta.

One of the largest announcements in the SDC 2016 was the unveiling of SAMSUNG ARTIK Cloud, an IoT platform designed to connect devices and applications using the previously-announced ARTIK IoT modules.

Curtis Sasaki, VP of Ecosystems and IoT GM, promises the modules have the ability to connect to the cloud within only 30 seconds, and that it took Samsung three years for the company to develop its new IoT offering.

There was also a strong focus on Samsung’s Knox security feature, which the company is trying to broaden the scope of with enterprise and IoT integration.

“I can’t think of any application that doesn’t consider data security,” said Injong Rhee, EVP and head of R&D for Samsung’s mobile software and services department during the presentation.

In addition to expanding to mid-tier Samsung devices and wearables, Knox will now be extended to work with Samsung’s Tizen operating system, and the company is releasing open APIs and SDKs that will allow Knox to work with various Internet of Things solutions.

Samsung also noted that Knox is supported by over 120 enterprise mobility management providers and, to help preserve legacy IT investments made by large enterprise clients, it performs with most popular single sign-on and virtual private network solutions.

Another piece of news announced at SDC was that it will be beginning its limited beta program for its forthcoming Connect Auto device this quarter, with an expanded beta program next quarter ahead of the full release.

Still to come, Samsung promised the announcement of an app that controls various smart devices via a smartphone camera called LiCon in a press release prior to the conference. It also mentioned ItsyWatch, a wearable that helps children form good habit and Entrim 4D+, a VR accessory that lets users feel the movements of on-screen action.

On top of the new announcements, research firm IDC has announced that Samsung shipped more smartphones than any other vendor in Q1 2016, shipping more than the runners-up—Apple and Huawei—combined.
