Apple starts selling Canadian designed Ecobee3 at its retail locations

Ecobee3

Starting today, a new version of the Canadian-designed Ecobee3 smart thermostat will be sold in Apple Stores across the continent.

This marks it as one of the first HomeKit-enabled devices to make its way into Apple’s lucrative retail locations.

Similar to Nest’s own offering, the Ecobee is a WiFi-enabled thermostat that attempts save its owner money by detecting whether they’re inside their home and adjusting the temperature accordingly. The capabilities of the thermostat can be enhanced by buying and installing additional sensors, which are available in packs of two for $79.

The HomeKit-enabled Ecobee3 has a couple of enhancements over its non-Apple certified predecessor. The most flashy addition is that the Ecobee can be controlled with the aid of Siri. There are a series of new voice commands that have been added with the release of HomeKit, all of which can be seen on Apple’s support website. More useful, however, is the fact that multiple HomeKit-enabled devices can be grouped together and controlled all at once. This allows platform users to set independent “scenes” in different rooms at different times of day.

The device is available for $249.00. Presumably, more HomeKit-enabled devices will make their way out into the wild soon.
