OnePlus One owners around the world are used to seeing Cyanogen software on their device. But now that the relationship between Cyanogen and OnePlus is hanging in the balance, the latter is working on its own custom ROM.
In December, OnePlus promised that the first release of its custom Lollipop ROM would be out this month. An announcement on the OnePlus forums reveals that the company has made good on its promise to deliver the first taste of its custom ROM early in the new year.
The catch is that there isn’t a whole lot of ‘custom’ going on here. In fact, this version contains no customizations at all. The official announcement post over on the OnePlus forums reports that this build contains “no extras beyond the stock features of AOSP Lollipop.” David S writes that this is the base upon which OnePlus will build and customize as it stabilizes core functionality.
“As we look towards the official ROM release in the near future, we will keep to our promise and deliver an experience that is customizable, yet bloat-free with stock-Android-like simplicity by default; we wouldn’t ask you to settle for anything less,” David wrote. “In the meantime, we thought you’d appreciate an early community preview and a progress report.”
Known problems with this build include stability issues with the camera, clock, and WiFi. David also notes that capacitive keys don’t turn off when software keys are enabled. The first boot is also slow and this build will not receive OTA updates.
Last month, OnePlus said a production-ready release of its custom ROM would be ready in February. No word on whether things are still on track for release next month.
