iPhone 6 may have a Galaxy-sized display, but the 4-inch iPhone isn’t going anywhere

The iPhone 6, or whatever Apple calls next year’s flagship, may have a 4.8-inch screen, according to early reports. The company has only once increased the size of its smartphone, from 3.5-inches on the 4S to 4-inches on the iPhone 5, but has until now resisted the trend to further bloat the size of its most profitable product.

With the iPhone 5s and 5c now on store shelves, it appears rumours of Apple’s next move are safe territory to roam. While it’s unlikely that the company will give up on the 4-inch form factor, a larger iPhone may appease Apple fans looking for more screen real estate and could cut into Samsung’s increasing market share.

According to Jefferies & Co analyst, Peter Misek, Apple will release a very Galaxy-sized 4.8-inch iPhone next year, though it’s unclear whether this will be the Note to the core iPhone’s Galaxy S, or if the larger device will take over as flagship. The so-called iPhone Math has long been a rumoured product in Apple’s arsenal, but CEO Tim Cook has waved aside external criticism that the company needs to increase the size of its iPhone to stay competitive.

But with devices like the Moto X and LG G2 proving that large-screened devices don’t necessarily need to be encumbered with huge bodies and distracting bezels, the technology is available for Apple to use. More difficult for the company would be adapting iOS to suit yet another resolution; app developers would be forced to redesign large portions of their apps, as the OS is less scalable than Android, which was developed for use on a variety of screen sizes and resolutions.

It’s also not clear that loyal Apple fans want a larger iPhone en masse; though the market is there in the Android sector, customers will be able to satiate that need by purchasing the 7.9-inch iPad mini or the upcoming iPad 5, which is expected to be much more compact than previous models.
