Since Nokia sold its devices and services division to Microsoft, the company has been focusing on licensing its brand and patents out to others, developing new technologies, and bringing its HERE navigation service to platforms outside of Windows Phone.
HERE Maps launched on Android several months ago and Nokia had promised a version for iOS was coming early in 2015. This week, it finally arrived. In a blog post published on the official HERE blog, Nokia revealed that the iOS version offers support for offline maps, as well as navigation by public transit or car via the route planner, voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation for cars, real-time and scheduled transit information, and contextual information and photos of different points of interest.
This isn’t the first time that HERE Maps has been available on iOS. It originally hit the App Store way back in 2012 but was pulled a year later due to “changes in iOS 7.” That version of the app was built on HTML5, but Nokia says this latest version is a “completely different app” that was built from the ground up for iOS. HERE Maps launches on the App Store for iOS users in 118 countries today.
