Yesterday, during Audi’s CES keynote presentation, a beautiful smartwatch appeared on stage that controlled the company’s upcoming self-driving car. The assumption was that the mystery timepiece was powered by Google’s Android Wear, but Android Central discovered today it’s actually Open webOS that’s making it tick.
The watch, which seems to have 3G connectivity and known as the “LGW” with model number LG-W120L, has a number of applications, including call, messaging, calendar, music, “LG Health W,” email, voice memo, gallery, remote start (presumably to start your vehicle), and find my phone. The watch itself is made of stainless steel, sapphire crystal and is water resistant.
HP purchased webOS from Palm in 2011 for $1.2 billion, but failed to make an impact and decided to make webOS open source in order to bring a “new generation of applications and devices.” LG then purchased parts of the webOS platform from HP in 2013 and has mainly been using it within its smart TV lineup.
LG is reportedly poised to release a webOS-powered smartwatch “early next year.” This would be a solid addition.
