This Rogers Wireless bill came to $47,377.92

Here’s another whopping wireless bill. The info was posted on Reddit by member “TheOneBabooshka” and apparently what you’re looking at is his monthly Rogers bill. His plan is usually around $50/month with 500MB of data, but this time the total usage came to an astonishing overage of 185.07GB – bringing the charge to $47,377.92. There’s no word on what really happened or what TheOneBabooshka was doing, but that’s a heck of alot of data. Here’s the thread:

“Just to clear some things up. I DID NOT use 180 GB worth of data. Rogers screwed up on their side. If I have not caught their mistake, I would’ve been screwed. They told me it should be fixed soon. But its been a couple days now, and it still remains the same… I record every word they say. I’m still attending post-secondary right now. My monthly bill is fixed at $50, with $47000, I can stick with this plan until I die and still carry over to my future children for another decent 20 years… As of right now. Yes. I will have to pay that amount. If Rogers does not fix this before my bill arrives, I am screwed.”

Update: Rogers sent us a note that stated the following – “I have an update for you. As I’m sure you know, we can’t release any information pertaining to a customer’s account but I can tell you that we have reached out to this customer and offered our help.”

Hopefully there’s some sort of resolution soon.

  2. If you didn’t accumulate the charges then no, you don’t have to pay… Will it affect your credit if you don’t pay right away? Yes. But that’s when you threaten to take them to court to reverse the charges as well as correct your credit history.

    • This won’t affect his credit if he doesn’t pay right away. The wireless carriers in Canada don’t report late payments to credit bureaus. Only if you’ve been sent to collections will it affect your credit. I used to work in the Accounts Receivable department at Big Red.

    • Rogers is different with credit reporting. They actually do post late payments directly to your credit profile. This is why most new Canadian immigrants get directed towards Rogers service – they require less security to activate, and if they make payments on time it will improve their credit score faster than if they go with any other carrier.

  8. Rogers has a data charge cap of $500. He is not facing a 47k bill. Although he should get Rogers to look at what’s going on there, clearly an error.

  9. Ooooof! I can’t even imagine. Also worth noting, it’s not worth paying a bill you didn’t accumulate in order to spare your credit rating. Not in Canada anyway. Thankfully.

Also, editor: “…but that’s a heck of alot of data” — ‘alot’ isn’t a word. Not that it’s not an honest mistake. Not trying to be one of those people, heh.

  10. As a Canadian, I usually try my best to stick with using products from Canadian brands. But if the federal gov’t decides eliminate foreign ownership restriction in the telecom sector and some foreign companies and screw the big 3 over I wouldn’t feel pity.

    • @Rob
Rogers already has call centers oversea. One of my Canadian friends working for Rogers call center was fired last August because they were moving them oversea.

I also got yelled at by some oversea call center agent when I was disputing contract termination with Rogers as the agent demanded me to “excuse his poor English” because it wasn’t his first language.

On top of that, think about it this way. Even if we send out low paying and crappy call center jobs to oversea, all of us would have more cash in our pockets to spend due to less gouging by the big 3. That means more money spending in other industries and they can easily fill in the void to hire more Canadians.

    • @Rob WIND et al employ Canadians too, and it’s not like Rogers pays their employees very well either; it’s just the execs making piles of green stuff at the expense of consumers. The net result of the way the Big 3 operate is a huge negative for Canada.

Normal charges (nevermind this junk) are skyrocketing while performance falls below the rest of the world. Ever been somewhere poor like Romania? Dirt cheap internet that’s been faster than ours for decades, 3000 minutes for a couple bucks, etc. We need to stop putting up with this crap.

Telcomms wants us to be accountable for our usage, let’s hope they be accountable themselves for this error and not screw up this guy/gal’s credit rating.

  14. When I was with Rogers, they overcharged me in couple of bills too (Each time it was around $15). I had to call every time to clear those mistakes. I guess their strategy is some people are not gonna call and will pay the extra bill without noticing.

Thanks God I left them as I had the option to switch to the pre paid plans from new entrants. I am the happiest person now, my bill never exceeds my pre payment.

Apparently there is a fee for upgrading on top of the advertised price. Do you know what they told me when I called back about the fee? Technically the answer I received was the right one. I just wasn’t told about the fee. Yeah, I learned not to trust Rogers years ago but shame on me to overlook it.

  17. For the most part, we have no real way of calculating our Data usage. Sure there are some apps that measure how much data you go through, but rogers or any other Carrier for that matter, don’t recognize the validity of those apps. The question is, how can we know or even contest what the carriers determine is our actual usage? We are just left to trust their numbers…..

I had the same issue and I got charged 45.5GB over my limit of 6GB a month. Called Rogers and apperantly this has been happening to a lot of costumers. I suggest you call Rogers and speak to a Manager. They will help you more

Worst Company I ever signed contract with , i had a 3 year plan to wake up 3 times to find that my phone has been cut off service and my bill is 800$ every single time to spend over a dozen hours with their Customer Service (Worst on earth) they hangup on me a few times spent numeros hours trying to fix these problems, to them they dont really care to fix it they want you to pay it , ended up paying the penelty for the last three months just to get rid of those basterds.
By the way every call to customer service they threaten you to send your bills to Collecting agencies to ruined your credit score , wake up Canada their a dozen phone providers stop using this company and stop accepting their shitty treatmen.

  26. The reason rogers customer service is so s**t is because they use 3rd party call centers which are in remote/small towns and the kids that work in there are the people that care the least for society. I worked at Sykes for a while, got fired during trianing because of policy even though I was the most qualified in my training class. The turn over rate there is incredible, they go through probably the most employees in a two month period than anywhere on earth.

They have sheep answering your phone calls spewing this and that about certain policies. They’re not even Rogers-sheep, they’re 3rd party sheep, with the 3rd party hired by rogers and the sheep employed by 3rd party

    • I thought i would reply here and let people with those high bills know something about their phones. If your using blackberry your usually ok because the data is compressed 10-1 on their network so high data usage is not normally occuring unless your keeping active connections open to the internet.

For Iphone and android users… Read your manuals about multi tasking and permissions. I work at Rogers in their call center and I see that 99.9% of those customers complaining about overages, have multiple programs, yes sometimes over 50 running on their iphones/androids in the background, never turn them off, never reboot their phones for months at a time. Having issues with “outgoing” data from the device. When we check your usage, and its 99.9% outgoing, the data issue is not at the rogers end. Its your phone with apps running having permission to use 3G/4G/LTE at any time. Most customers tell me, “i don’t even use my phone at midnight-8am because i am sleeping.

Wake up people, read your manuals. When your using a smart phone be smart. Look at the apps your installing, read their instructions. You will find 90% of them get full permission to access Wireless at any time, which they do, they update, they send packets constantly in the background, they even send you ad banners constantly, which is all data.

I hear people complaining that we are over charging them, but if your doing this what i stated above, you need to educate yourself. My father said to me once “Son, Ignorance is no excuse, educate thyself” i took that to heart, and i learned the inside and out of things i do in my life.

Make sure you do the same and learn what and how your phone uses data. I know the rogers network records how much data and when, but we cannot tell what you were doing when it occured “the canadian privacy act” prevents this.

however i am going to provide you with a step by step solution to try for one month, and if your usage doesn’t go down. Then you have a legitimate beef with rogers and you should speak to customer service.

On the Iphone, when you get home, and want to save money on cellualar data do the following:

1 GO to settings, general network
      2 Turn off cellular data
3 monitor your data usage for that night and i bet it will be 0 because this turn off all cellular data traffic on the phone but does allow wifi/sms/phone calls.

      On the android

1 Go to settings, wireless and networks, mobile networks
      2 turn off packet data
3 montior your data usage over night and you will find the same thing as the Iphone, no data usage on cellular

this simple solution “educating yourself” about how to prevent unnessary data usage access to the cell network, you will find your usage will drop by 50%

Also on the iphone, religiously double tap the home button press and hold on one of the icons there, when you see a red “-” sign on the top left corner of the wiggling icons. click it and close the background apps. This will save you more usage as those apps are now not running in the background.

Now on android, the built in app manager is uselss, get something like advanced task killer from the android market “read its instructions” and enable auto app shutdown every 15 mins, and it will auto close anything you forget, when using the phone and then finishing with an app. tap the advanced task killer icon and check every app running, yes including task killer and end them… that way they cannot run in the background.

I do this, i have a 500mb plan and to date over a year with that plan, i have never exceeded 500Mb ever on my cell plan.

Because i educated myself how to prevent it…

Do that… and then let me know what your monthly usage is.

If its 6GB + then your either having a legitimate issue

also install your own data monitor program, from the apple store or android market, I use data counter widget, on my android and its never failed me as long as i remember to reset it daily. but keep track of the monthly totals.

  32. Please check my math:
according to the image, the next bill date is Mar 11, meaning the billing cycle started on Feb 11, just over 4 days ago. I don’t know when the data usage was recorded, so I assume the end of yesterday (4 days or 345600 seconds). 185,560,000 KB of data in 4 days, is about 536.92 KB/sec, for the entire duration of that time. Obviously an error on Rogers part!

  37. Not saying that this person really did use the data, but with tethering, 180Gbs is quite possible. Also, I’m not sure if I’m the only one, but I really don’t see how it could cost him 47000$ for 180GB of over. At 25¢/Mb, it only adds up to 4500$. There’s over 40000$ unaccounted for with what we see here.

At work, same thing happened with a few of our accounts, very randomly we had a few people that exceeded their data on their blackberry by 2GB, I called them and told them about it as well. There’s something definitely going on with their billing system, either that or, they’re hoping some don’t notice and just pay the bill. This is the reason why I don’t do pre-authorized payment.

  43. That’s nothing. Mine said I used 7,500 GB. I called them and they said it’s a known issue and there is nothing to worry about.

  44. Rogers only cares to help costumers out when they go to the media or a public forum. Just like RogersNicholas. He ONLY came here to say those words but on the Rogers community website Rogers are no help & the mods on their always delete & ban you if you try to say something about Rogers..

  45. “Rogers sent us a note that stated the following – “I have an update for you. As I’m sure you know, we can’t release any information pertaining to a customer’s account but I can tell you that we have reached out to this customer and offered our help.” ”
Help? Robbers? It must be the best joke of the year. LMAOF

  46. WOW.
The comments on this site just keep getting worse and worse.

The article is pure conjecture and shameless tabloid journalismism because:
    a) This kid’s bill hasn’t even been generated yet and he’s using bad math and ignoring his ToS to calculate a ridiculous boogie-man number he’ll never see in the first place.
    b) Multiple people have confirmed that Roger’s meter was broken part of this month and that’s what caused the issue and it will be fixed before he sees a bill.

PROTIP: spectrum is a commodity. You can’t get everything for nothing so SHUT THE FUCK UP with your complaining and get what you pay for.

Some of us who actually work in the industry need to use this site on a daily basis and don’t want to be forced to sift through your melodramatic pity-party over and over and over.

Want Mobilicity in the rear and Wind in the mouth? Fine.
    Just don’t make me watch.

    • Just because people comment does not mean you need to be rude :/ You are talking about others but look at your self..

The kid might not have known about the issue with others so he asked for help. Remember not every mobile site has the issue written everyone so people know.
Second the math is right. If you actually sit down & do it maybe you will see its the right amount.
third. Yes some of us use this site to see stuff but so what? Grow up & stfu. If you do not like the comments then do not reply. You must be some Rogers rep or some i***t that comes in here thinking he is going to write a law down or something.

Rogers NEVER went public & said that the meter is broken or anything so no one would have known until others posted. Fucking read for once before you comment for f**k sakes.

  47. The math IS wrong though. anyone who actually reads their ToS knows that data overages automagically Max out at $500 so at worst this kid is looking at paying $550 (his plan plus max overage). Ergo he used bad math and mobilesyrup used sensationalism as link bait.

Don’t conflate giving a s**t about the industry with being a shill for rogers. You couldn’t be further from the truth. These companies got bargain basement prices on top shelf spectrum and throw it around like it isn’t a commodity, devaluing other stakeholders and impeding progress in wireless technology. Someone needs to call them out on it, just as someone needs to call commenters here on the wind/mobilicity circle jerk.
The truth hurts sometimes so try not to get all butthurt when realtalk happens.

  50. It should be noted that the screenshot just shows a usage checker, not an actual bill like the article implies. Also, it’s pretty apparent that, unless this guy actually did download the equivalent of 100 HD movies on his phone, this is a mistake that will be fixed before this guy recieves an actual bill. Calm down, people.

  53. People really should educate themselves, Rogers doesn’t use 3rd party companies or outsource to different countries just like lol said ” Ottawa, Brampton, Moncton and out West” Just because you hear voice with an accent you jump to conclusions. Rogers use to source out to other countries but then changed their way to Canada only years ago.
