Nokia’s ClearBlack display technology explained: it’s all in the polarization

Nokia has a good thing in its ClearBlack display technology. Instead of pumping out higher brightness LCDs to offset the reflections of direct sunlight, the company devised a way of using polarizing filters, much like in a pair of sunglasses, to reflect the interfering light away from the eye. This allows you to not only see better in direct light, but increases true contrast to the point where you can’t often tell where the screen ends and the bezel begins.

As we noted in our Lumia 800 Hands-On, its AMOLED screen is remarkable, especially for one made up of a WVGA PenTile matrix; it’s much clearer and sharper than the equivalent-sized Super LCD, for example.

As Nokia’s Conversations blog notes, “ClearBlack display uses a sequence of polarising layers to eliminate reflections. Polariser layers used in display solutions are bit more sophisticated than in sunglasses. Light rays actually gets ‘processed’ many times on its way in and out of your phone’s screen.”

The effect is that what hits your eye is cleaner and more vibrant than one that hasn’t been filtered.

    • You really think an Android user will be jealous of a 800×480 pentile AMOLED display? Those were good in the days of the Nexus One, Galaxy S and Nexus S but there is now much better.

    • Of course I do.
A good display plus a stable OS that offer everything without trouble or the help of XDA is something that I admire.
      Don’t you ?

    • There is a reason i have a Venue Pro as my main PHONE and an GS2 Data Sharing as my main toy.

      A) Windows phones don’t do much fun.
      B) Androids suck at being reliable phones (If you like tweaking, I do. )

  6. For once we read about an innovation that actually sounds like an innovation.

Jaded by hearing about Apple spending $100 million to prevent HTC using click-to-email in the US, etc.

Nokia really knows how to make phones – I think Android is great, but Nokia and MS could prove to be a great tech team!

  7. Do these screens work when you’re wearing polarized sunglasses? There should be two anglesof phone holding where you completely block out the polarized screen.

  9. Hope they have good heat dissipation designed into this handset.

A device that takes 100% of sunlight in and lets none of it out is basically a solar oven, except that this one is filled with heat-sensitive silicone chips and batteries.
