Rogers has gone live with their iPhone 4S upgrade eligibility online tool. This gives their current 9 million plus wireless customers the ability to see how much it would cost to upgrade to the new iPhone 4S. The form is painless to fill out but once you get a confirmation email back it might cause some frustration. It all depends on where you are in your upgrade cycle as it could get a bit costly.

Back in May, Rogers adjusted their early hardware upgrade policy and it ranges depending on the device you’re upgrading from. RedBoard, The Rogers company blog, stated that “This new early upgrade offer applies to our entire lineup and replaces special device specific hardware upgrade offers we’ve had in the past, such as the iPhone 4 early upgrade offer”:

- $10 per month for voice or quick messaging devices
- $15 per month for select smartphones, tablets and other eligible devices
- $20 per month for premium devices (example: iPhone 4S)
(the above should be multiplied by the number of remaining months until your eligible to upgrade)

You can log in to see what upgrading to the new iPhone 4S will cost you, a new 3-year contract must be signed and Rogers is also charging a one-time $35 “Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee”.

    • Jay

      dude, wrong animal

With that kind of upgrade fees, you might as well buy it directly from Apple unlocked and don’t even need to renew your contract.

I could outright buy it for those prices…

    • Andy

It’s the same pricing you pay for any Canadian carrier. Even prehup fees.

    • Kev

      When did you last HUP?

  • Dimitri k

@ Andy. They do not see that tho. Bell & Telus have the same program going on. But some people only b***h about rogers YET all the big 3 have it. Called Bell & Telus & they are NOT doing a special early upgrade for anyone at all for the iPhone.

so why b***h about Rogers & tell them you are leaving yet the other 2 big ones ( Bell & Telus) are doing the same.. Does not make sense.

  • Patrick

Under the new upgrade model that most carriers have adopted, your “upgrade fee” is directly related to the previous subsidy you received on your last phone, prorated based on the amount of time you have completed on your contract.

So if you just got an iPhone 4 last year, it is ridiculous to expect great deals…

iPhone subsidies around somewhere between 450-500$ over 36 months… do the math :)

The real sweet spot is upgrading every 2nd year, at that point your “buy-out” is relatively inexpensive or non-existent sometimes (depending on certain conditions).

We complain about 3 year contract, but you CAN realistically upgrade every 2 years like our American friends!

    • Randy – 1

…except that Americans also get early upgrade offers well before their 2 year terms are up, which means they can upgrade even more frequently again.

    • aka

      @Randy – 1

When any Canadian carrier reaches 90 million+ subscribers (like AT&T, Verizon) or 52 million+ subscribers (Sprint), that’s when you may get contract pricing parity with the US. Until then it’s pointless to compare the two countries in pricing.

  • Tom@BBM

Quebec customers, please be reminded that these fees dont apply to you if you signed your previous contract after July 2010. You will only owe the remaining balance of your rebate to get your new phone (in some cases its a big balance, if your purchased an iPhone or GSII or something).

I wish we could use this tool for non-iPhone devices too.

    • Zomby

I tought the same thing. Give me the choice of all phones then you’ll have something to write about. Right now it’s a non-feature, as I already know the iFail is overpriced.

  • andrew l

I have three Rogers accounts and the fee is ranging from $255 – $380. I don’t quite understand how they calculate this.

  • Tod L

    iPhone 4S 16GB $209.00 + $35 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee
    iPhone 4S 32GB $319.00 + $35 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee

  • zar

209$ retail price is criminal for an iPhone…but I guess they need a reason to keep selling the 4 and the 3gS

  • zar

My bad, I meant 3yr price

  • Alex

    iPhone 4S 16GB $209.00 + $320.00 Early Upgrade Fee*
+ $35 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee

    LOL!

    • mylivespot

Alex, did you upgrade within the last 12 months or so? When did you last upgrade and what was the unsubsidised cost of the device you got?

  • andy c

i dont mine paying the 205 or 199 like the do in the States.

just cut my contract down to 2 years like in the States

    • Andy

      @Andy C, @Zar:

If you read carefully, it is $209 and a $50 rebate, netting to $159.

      Mentioned in ‘Full Details’
      .
      .
      .
Customers who renew on select three-year terms may be eligible for a one-time $50 Hardware Upgrade Rebate credit. Credit to be applied to customer’s invoice.

  • techq

@Andrew it pretty much says to me that you upgraded your lines between 12 and 18 months ago and your subsidy on your last devices still has not been paid back with your months bills. So if you want a new phone it would be better to pay outright for it, and if you want 30 days to pay, sign a new 3 year.

  • mylivespot

If you upgraded your device last year, of course the early upgrade fee is going to be steep. Mine are pretty high but I just got a phone last summer so I figured as much.

People want free handsets and ultra cheap monthly costs.. it doesn’t add up.

  • Roberto

    You rookies… lol :p

    iPhone 4S 16GB $209.00 + $320.00 Early Upgrade Fee*
+ $35 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee
    iPhone 4S 32GB $319.00 + $320.00 Early Upgrade Fee*
+ $35 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee
    iPhone 4S 64GB $419.00 + $320.00 Early Upgrade Fee*
+ $35 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee
    iPhone 4 8GB $149.00 + $320.00 Early Upgrade Fee*
+ $35 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee
    Plus applicable taxes

These dudes are outta their minds thinking I would pay $774 AND sign a three year contract instead of buying it from apple for just $75 more ($849).

  • MER1978

If service providers can’t show how their subsidies work with 100% transparency they shouldn’t be allowed to do handset subsidies at all.

  • Scaz

It blows my mind how people come here and comment on things they have NO idea about. The reason most of you have Early Upgrade Fees of huge amounts is because you only recently upgraded your phone. How can you people expect Rogers/Telus/Bell to hand you 700$ phones for 1/4th the price every few months?

If it has been long enough since your last upgrade, you will pay what everyone else normally pays, why should you be any different or special?

As for upgrade fees, sure they suck, but everyone does them, even US carriers and UK carriers too (normally masked as a required “top-up”)

Compared to 3 years ago Canada has come leaps and bounds in terms of actual hardware availability (we got the Galaxy S II months before the US and consistently get most of the big name ones on the 3 big carriers here). The phone hardware costs are also fairly cheap at full prices. Take the iPhone 4 in the UK is about 820$ LOCKED on O2 but contract free, vs $660 here. Plus the price for our plans have dropped drastically to almost align with some US carriers (6gb data for 65+ Fab10 is pretty damn good). Its funny how people complain but 95% of people would easily be covered by the current plans without overages, they just don’t use their noggin and think if what they are doing is covered.

  • GB

I haven’t upgraded my phone in something like 5 years. This is the deal i get.
    iPhone 4S 16GB $209.00 + $35 Admin Fee
    iPhone 4S 32GB $319.00 + $35 Admin Fee
    iPhone 4S 64GB $419.00 + $35 Admin Fee
    iPhone 4 8GB $149.00 + $35 Admin Fee

    • Andy

But did you take into account your hup rebate of $50?

  • James

In comparison, I Called TELUS … My current offers are as follows:
    iPhone 4S 16GB $159.00 + $25 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee
    iPhone 4S 32GB $269.00 + $25 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee
    iPhone 4S 64GB $369.00 + $25 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee
Why are TELUS prices and fees less?? I thought all carriers programs were the same?? I understand mid contract differences in driving fees, however I am within 6 months of the end of mine, so I don’t have an “early upgrade fee” tied to my offers like others, however the cost of device is significantly less in addition to my general processing “upgrade fee” being less.

  • aka

There must be something wrong with the Rogers upgrade site for charging $50 more than MSRP.

    The iPhone 4S pricing is as follows. 16GB $649 MSRP, 32GB $749 MSRP, 64GB $849 MSRP
    3-year term pricing as follows. 16GB $159 (though I could have sworn it was $169), 32GB $269, 64GB $369

Apple suggests MSRP and 3-year term subsidies across the entire country, so all carriers are selling for same price.

Admin fee aside, you basically take the number of months remaining and multiply by $10, $15, or $20 per month, depending on your current device type. If I read this article correctly, for the typical iPhone user wanting to upgrade with 18 months left on term means you’ll be paying $360 to pay off your previously subsidy + cost of iPhone 4S based on storage size on current pricing. ex. iPhone 3GS 16GB with 18 months remaining and you want iPhone 4S 16GB, you pay $360 upgrade fee + $159 discounted phone price = $519 vs paying $649 MSRP. Total savings of about $130 compared to buying it MSRP.

Did you really think Rogers will let the previously hardware subsidy slide and you give full upgrade pricing half way through a 36-months contract? If you want out of contracts, then pay full price for the phone and sell the current unit, simple. A year later, don’t complain about spending another $650 for iPhone 5.

  • Socius

If I pay Rogers $2000 a year between my iPhone 4 and unsubsidized ipad2, then yes I do expect a full $500 off the iPhone each year.

If I called in and got a bunch of retention plan offers and paid just $55/month like many people, I could understand why Rogers wouldn’t give me a $500/year discount since I’d have only paid them $660/year. That wouldn’t make sense.

But the fact that I’m paying what I am for hardly any usage on my phone,,,,and rogers not understanding the business sense behind why they should give me that discount….after having been with them for 9 years…I dunno. I feel unappreciated because I know I can get a better deal anywhere else. I just hadn’t cared because I kept saying it’s ok that I pay so much because they appreciate me as a customer and give me earlier hardware upgrades.

  • David

    @Dimitri k

The info provided by you and Andy is wrong. Telus does offer a early device upgrade program but it has nothing to do with a flat fee per month like rogers does. If you initial subsidy was 400$ and you have 1 year left on your 3 year contract, It means your subsidy is 133.33$. The buyback is not linked to the type of device or anything it is directly calculated based on the rebate you got and there is no Upgrade fee but a standard equipment exchange fee is applicable(25$) like for any swap

I initially signed up with an iPhone 3G, skipped the 3GS and last August 2010 I got an iPhone 4. 2 months later, I had my iPhone 4 stolen at school. Rogers offered me Nokia C3. Anyone that has any logic whatsoever would take into consideration the $90/month SMARTPHONE plan this customer (myself) is paying before offering a phone. Anyways, after 2 paychecks I was scammed into buying this “smartphone” called Blackberry off Kijiji. It was only temporarily, waiting for the next iPhone. And here I am. iPhone 4S, a whopping $580!!I believe I qualify for a $50 HUP Rebate making it $159.00 + $320 + $35. I have no choice but to pay this amount. You dont know what its like to go from an iPhone to Blackberry. No man/woman should experience this form of torture.
