Samsung Galaxy S II 4G officially available in Canada!

It’s now available Canada. The Samsung Galaxy S II 4G can now be purchased exclusively online and in-stores from Bell, Virgin and SaskTel. Bell states on their site that “The Samsung Galaxy S II 4G is truly an amazing superphone”… this comes packed with Android 2.3, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED plus display that has a resolution of 480 x 800, dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 8 megapixel camera that can take 1080p HD videos, a 2 megapixel front-facing camera, Wi-Fi and ability to create a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to 8 devices. Overseas this thin beast of a phone has sold 3 million units in just over 50 days, us Canadians will certainly add to this number too. As for price points, the no contract price is $599.95; 1-year contract is $574.95; 2-year is $549.95 and 3-year for $169.95.

  1. Great news sur “superphone” lovers. :D But for budget-minded people like me, this phone is almost $600, and thus out of range. :|

    • Well, you’re in luck because Bell’s here to help you out! Just signup for two years and get the phone for $549.95!

      :-|

I love how Bell (and Rogers/Telus) discount their phones $50 for a two year contract but give you another $400 off for signing up for a 3rd year. Way to go guys.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 2

    Posted by Mungaber | July 21, 2011, 9:25 am
    • Nope, afraid not. Wind and Mobilicity use the 1700 Mhz band (known as AWS), but the radio in the GSII only supports 850/900/1800/1900/2100 MHz bands (according to Bell’s website), which are the standard GSM bands supported by Telus, Bell, Rogers, and most international carriers.

  12. It’s a sweet device no doubt. But why all the hype about dual core phones when there’s barely an application for multi-core processors on Android at this point in time?

I’ll wait until the OS and significant number of apps take advantage of such capabilities (thinking of Ice Cream based phones or greater). Because really, what can this phone do that’s sooo much better than a top end smartphone from a year ago (ie Nexus One, Desire, etc…)? Sure it looks pretty, sure it’s super fast, but in terms of functionality I just can’t find enough to convince me to upgrade.

    • When you load an application/game on a dual core you’ll know the difference quick. Same with multi tasking, web browsing.

Clicked on Let’s Golf on a Sony Arc and it was loading loading loading…ugh

    • Being dual core will help when multitasking or playing games with background tasks running. It also help battery life since tasks complete quicker and the CPU can scale back it’s clock speed.

Other than that, it has a great screen, good HD camera, full HD video playback, more RAM. If you’re satisfied with your current device, or something else, you don’t NEED to buy this phone. But I sure am… just waiting for my local carrier to get some stock. (It sometime sucks to live in rural areas.)

  13. I’m debating buying this from Bell and unlocking it myself as I’m with Rogers, or buying it unlocked. Is there any benefit in buying an unlocked phone over just doing it yourself?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 2

    Posted by LC | July 21, 2011, 9:44 am
    • Well, with most phones, buying the unlocked version will save you the $15-30 for the unlock code. However, the GSII has an app available on the market that will find the unlock code buried in the firmware, so you can unlock it for free.

The bigger problem is the fact that Bell won’t let you buy from them outright unless you have a Bell account to link the phone to. Best Buy and Futureshop will eventually be selling it outright, but word has it there’s a 30-day embargo, so you may have to wait a while.

    • Their’s no such thing as I’ve put a down payment on one at FS and they just told me they prefer not selling them outright but that they are allowed to do so. I’ll be picking it up shortly. Unless different regions or store managers deal with this differently from store to store you should be able to pick one up at FS.

  17. “But why all the hype about dual core phones when there’s barely an application for multi-core processors on Android at this point in time?”

I’m not sure why ice-cream sandwich keeps coming up relative to multi-core. Gingerbread is fully multi-core capable — Dalvik (“java”) apps have long supported multithreading, and in fact that is completely natural for any app to split processing from the UI thread. It will distribute that across cores. Additionally multiple apps, services, background processes — Android is fully multicore capable, courtesy of Linux. All ICS really brings is that garbage collection and JIT compilation will get some multi-core tweaks.

It is a weird situation where the real-world benefits much more than some dated benchmarks.

The Galaxy S II is much more than multicore though. Even a single core on it is a blistering barnburner of a processor. The GPU is killer. The screen is amazing. Both the front and back cameras are top notch for a smartphone. The media support is incredible (the thing plays *anything*. It is quite a shock to have that after being so accustomed to “File Format is not supported” on all prior Android devices, and when they did support it the herky-jerk result was unpalatable. Compared to the buttery playback on the Galaxy S II….)

The Galaxy S II is a super-super phone. If anything it, thus far, has been seriously under-hyped. Not only is it a phone for today, but it is a phone for tomorrow as well (which should be really important for those signing up for long contracts. Personally I bought mine free and clear).

    • “tomorrow” it will be obsolete. HD resolution, quad cores, tegra 3, nfc, blah blah, that’s already this year.

Can you imagine in 2 years? It will be an old piece of junk that barely works. Gotta love long contracts.

  19. >Isnt it that android doesn’t support dual core until 3.1?

No. Absolutely, positively not. This is a gross misinterpretation of a SDK release note, and it has gained truth through repeated assertion.

Here’s where it was sourced from-

    http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-3.0-highlights.html#multicore

All they are talking about is better support in the Dalvik VM — namely multi-core use by the JIT compiler and the garbage collector. In the grand scheme of things, however, such is actually a very minor performance element in most real-world scenarios.

  20. Just bought my one at the Bell Hillcrest Mall in Richmond Hill. Unfortunately even when buying it outright, they activate the phone on sight to your sim/plan. Plus they ask if you are a customer, and you have to be a customer to buy outright.

Oh and by the time the next one will be out, there will be better around the corner. Have fun waiting for an eternity.

Plus I already have super phone that does everything GS2 does for months. I’d rather wait for something much better if I’m going to upgrade again. Plus I rather have great gps, led notification, better voice quality, better speaker, just a better “phone”.

Already do ~4000 quadrant bascially stock, blah blah. So what am I upgrading for, a little better camera…meh…

  32. Good Evening new SG2 owners.

I am sure you will all be as pleased with your new phone as I am. It truly is a beautiful and head turning phone. Truly a real beast.

First of all if you’re new to Android I recommend spending sometime on xda developers. It has a wealth of information on things you can do with your SG2, things to buy, try and anything else you can think of. Enjoy!!!

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1055

Gorilla glass…my UK phone had it and unfortunately I have dropped it a couple of times (on gravel and concrete and have yet to have any scratches on it….yet….knock on wood). Now GG can still scratch just not as easy. 2.5 mths and no marks yet. I have purchased some Steinheil protectors however yet to put them on, maybe this weekend. Many reviews on xda on the various types available. I just received my MHL adapter this week and now can run this on my Plasm tv…..simply amazing and has added a totally new dynamic to my SG2.

I have yet to purchase a case of any kind for this. Probably my only issue as of yet. Yes many reviews and pictures of the various brands and types but I would love to see some and try them before buying. I am in Manitoba and there is no Bell here and Virgin here doesn’t support these phones on their network. So I am very limited to the cases I can see and try. Best Buy has one and also Costco but that is it. Hopefully now with this release, more things will become available for me to see and try.

Other than that I don’t have any problems or complaints with my SG2. I love it and any of my friends and family that have tried it have fallen in love with it as well.

Sorry to hear the M version released in Cdn is locked. More bull**** from our carriers.
