Rogers announced their iPhone 4 price plans and rates. Highlights are that they have returned the $30/6GB plan, iPad sharing plans, Family Share Plans and discounted Hardware Upgrades… depending on where you sit in your contract could score you the 16GB iPhone 4 for $159 or a 32GB iPhone 4 for $269.
In addition, no term pricing is now confirmed to be
New 32GB iPhone 4 $749
New 16GB iPhone 4 $649
Update: Customers were complaining when using the Hardware Upgrade tool on Rogers.com that it gave them incorrect info, thus confusing people. They have issued an update on RedBoard: “Updated July 29, 3:13 pm: We are experiencing technical difficulties with our HUP eligibility tool and it may be giving incorrect results. We’re aware of it and are working on it. While we do, the tool may be temporarily unavailable. Thanks for your patience.”
Straight from the Rogers RedBoard, here are the details:
Return of special smartphone $30/6 GB plan
Effective July 30, and as a limited time promotional offer for smartphone customers who activate on a three-year contract, Rogers is offering 6GB of data for $30. This data plan can be added to any in-market voice plan before September 30, 2010.
*New* smartphone and iPad sharing plans
You’ve told us you love our in-market iPad plans and the ease of activation on Rogers – but some of you have asked for device sharing and we’ve listened. Starting July 30, and for a limited time until Sept. 30, customers on a 6 GB plan will be able to share data between iPhones and iPads for an extra $20 (plus Government Regulatory Recovery Fee).
Any news for new iPhone 4 customers?
New customers can purchase a 16GB iPhone 4 for $159 or a 32GB iPhone 4 for $269, each with a new three-year voice and data plan on Canada’s proven and reliable network.
Did you activate or upgrade your Rogers iPhone on a term contract between January 1, 2009 and June 7, 2010?
Then you’re eligible for at least $250 off the no-term device price. That’s an iPhone 4 16GB/32GB for $399/$499 on a new 3-year voice and data plan.
Did you activate or upgrade your Rogers iPhone on a term contract on or before December 31, 2008?
Thank you for your business. You’re eligible for at least $480 off the no-term device price. You can pick up an iPhone 4 16GB/32GB for $159/$269 on a new 3-year voice and data plan.
Did you activate or upgrade the original iPhone 3G in 2008 and then upgrade again between June 19 and September 15, 2009?
You’re also eligible for at least $480 off the no-term device price. You can pick up an iPhone 4 16GB/32GB for $159/$269 on a new 3-year voice and data plan.

Really? Than why did Rogers’ new online calculator say that I was eligible for the hardware upgrade at $649? Sounds like their online calculator obviously doesn’t work…

Just tried their calculator too and it spit out $649 for the 16GB. Strange since my contract start date was July 2008. However, I am on a $17.50/m EPP plan so perhaps that’s why. Anybody else on an EPP getting full price HUP replies?

I don’t think the rogers online calculator is working, I punched in 2 numbers and it says I have to pay $649 for both of them.
The recent upgrade of rogers web site is really a disaster, many functions were broken plus it is dreadfully slow – must be running on Windoze.

Is the iPhone locked to Rogers though? If so, and you travel enough, you may pay off the price difference (between the Rogers price and the outright purchase from Apple directly) by buying local SIMs on the road. Roaming rates are /crazy/!

I signed up for my Rogers plan in early 2008 but the upgrade pricing says $649!!!! WTH???
When I checked my contract it says that my contract ends in 2012…I presume that they extended my contract in late 2009 when I switched from a regular smart phone plan to blackberry plan cause my previous moto smart phone busted. Not impressed!

Eligibility tool isn’t working, don’t bother.
For $650 you can buy the 4 unlocked from Apple, no contract required so DON’T buy it from Rogers unless you qualify for a discount and want to renew for another 3 years.
Don’t pay the ripoff iPad fee, jailbreak your device and run MyWi.
“Rogers Keith” deletes comments pointing out these things, don’t give them page views!

So when they say “on a new 3 year term” for exisiting customers eligible for an upgrade, do they mean that you’ll be add 3 more years to the contract or just extending the contract to a maximum of 3 years (ie, 2 years left in contract, get iphone, now 3 years left on contract)?

You want me to pay $499 for a phone AND sign a new 3-year contract. You must be kidding. Rogers is likely getting the phones for that price. I am not getting a subsidized phone, I am paying an extortion fee on my bill.

Why should these people get an even better discount? They upgraded both times. They should be paying the same $399/$499.

That data sharing plan is crazy! Why should you pay to use the same data accross 2 devices. And especially at a rate where for just $10 more you can get 6gb on both!
I’m sorry but anyone who pays $20 for data sharing is a fool.

@Bob-o – these are people who have shown themselves to be early adopters. People that are willing to sign a new contract if it means they’ll get a new device. In theory, most of these people probably end up paying off their subsidy within the first year of their contract any way, so Rogers is happy to lock them in for another 3 years.
@LAOO – typing in all caps doesn’t make you sound smarter, FYI. And MOST of the people buying a new iPhone will likely be going the contract route, so $159 or $269. And the iPhone 4 kinda beats the crap outta the Desire, which is 6 month old technology. The only real competitor from the Android side of things in Canada is the Galaxy S. Some might argue the X10 as well, but I personally disagree (I really don’t like the Sony UI).
And yes – data sharing for iPad is ridiculous. Rogers has shown that they really don’t want to encourage this at ALL, by setting the rates to those values. Just shell out the extra 10 bucks and get double your value.

Please, for the sake of humanity, DO NOT GET THE IPAD SHARING PLAN. It is a complete rip off to PAY MORE MONEY FOR THE SAME DATA YOU ALREADY PAID FOR!!! Please understand this!!!
You have a $30 Data plan and you pay $20 more dollars to USE THE SAME DATA?!?!? Paying for this just confirms for Rogers that we are i****s.

Why dont Rogers offer cheaper plans to people who have paide for their phone outright?
If you have paid for your phone then there is no subsidy that you have to repay through your contract.
Contracts should be abolished. If providers want to lock people and provide handsets, then providers should offer payback schemes for 1, 2 and 3 year periods for handsets. the monthly payback price should be added to your plan cost.
Also, government should regulate clarity in pricing plans from telcos. The total cost of your plan should be advertised along with the cost of the subsidised phone.
Your $270 iphone will actually cost you, if you want voicemail and caller id, approximately $2600 over a three year period(36*$65+$270).
If you buy your iphone outright it costs you $800 and you can pick the level of service you want. Assuming the $2600 you pay above, over a three year period (2600-800)/36 = $50 per month. I am sure you can get a pretty decent plan for that. Plus you could negotiate with Rogers at any time and tell them you will go to someone else to get an even better deal!!!!
Cmon MobileSyrup if the telcos arent gonna do it then you should! When you provide subsided costs for phones how about presenting the actual costs as well!

Explain this to me: Why would I pay 500$ for a cellphone and then 50$ a month for my plan when I can get it for 160$ and still pay my 50$ a month? It doesn’t cost you any more or any less if you buy off or on contract- it all works out in the end if you actually PLAN ON USING YOUR PHONE!
I dunno about you people- but I don’t go changing up my cellphone every year. Nor do I buy a new laptop, TV, or any other electronic every year. 3 years is a long contract, but I am actually planning on using my phone for 3 years. If it dies, THEN I buy a new one. Pick your carrier wisely, stay loyal, and they’ll give you discounts. I agree our contracts are to long- but I don’t have any desire to switch providers since I chose Rogers since they met my needs the best.
I will be buying the iPhone 4 as soon as I can!

If you get an unlocked phone, does anyone know of a Canadian mobile carrier that offers better rates & shorter/no term if you bring your own phone?
By the way, Kevin O’Leary said, I believe, that he has a US-based phone because the roaming rates in Canada + no roaming charges in the US makes it cheaper to base it there! Of course he may spend more time in the States than I do…

@Ryan Waddell: Get real. The HTC Desire is typically ranked about the iphone 4, and comes out of the box with a working antenna and no Steve Jobs arrogance. The pricing on it with Telus ($79.99, 3 year) is only going to help further the gap between iPhone and Android. Stop bashing Android and just enjoy your iPhone 4 this weekend.

@ A. Smith,
Two things:
1) Why do you feel the need to stay loyal to any company which exists to sell YOU a service?
2) Did you read the contract you signed with your telco provider? There is no wording in that contract which protects your interests as a customer.
For example, once locked into a contract the provider has the right to change their prices without any notice. The telco can also change service details without notice. They can offer any promotional pricing plans they want to get you to sign up and then change them afterward if they become too costly for Rogers. i.e. How long do you expect them to offer 6Gb plans for $30, when they have recently charging $25 for 500Mb?
Ultimately, if you want to sign up for a three year contract go ahead. However, now you know that that the overall difference in cost between locking yourself into a three year contract and having financial freedom is about $15 a month for the iphone4 and less for cheaper phones such as the HTC Desire.
