With the iPhone 4 launching in Canada on July 30th, a IDC survey conducted last week in the U.S. polled IT professionals and it showed that 66% of current iPhone owners plan on delaying their iPhone 4 purchase because of the antenna & reception issues. In addition, 74% who don’t own but plan to buy an iPhone 4 stated the antenna and reception problems wouldn’t delay their purchase.
Will Stofega, a mobile device analyst for IDC said “That’s a very mixed message. It looks like a perfect example of the difference between behavioral economics and market economics. The iPhone 4 clearly isn’t working as it should, Apple’s saying that ‘We’ll give you a Bumper,’ but people seem committed to the iPhone. Many of them see this as overblown, and that Apple will fix it.”
There are no numbers on Canadian stats yet. What do you plan on doing? Take our poll here:

Well, the iPhone 4 is probably one of the best phones subsidize in Canada right now. The xperia x10 is a joke. If if the Samsung Galaxy S comes in September, Apple products tend to have a higher resell value anyway. Even with the issues, i’m glad it came with the bumper, it can help my phone in mint condition so i can resell it and get a dual core snapdragons phone when they are out.

I’m a former iPhone 3G user. I waited for the iPhone 4 announcement and opted for a Nexus One, not because of the antenna issue but because of the openness of Android. (No need to jailbreak to install non-appstore apps.) The iPhone 4 didn’t have any killer feature that convinced me to stay. Couldn’t be happier with my decision.

The iphone looks nice but for me it doesn’t really bring anything revolutionary to the table. If anything, it looks like it had to play catch up especially in the OS department.
I will wait to see what Android and Blackberry have to offer before making any commitment.

CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL.
Not really, but both of your spelling and grammar is terrible. Also, Android is better than iPhone because what good is a phone that doesn’t let you make calls with your left hand? But, in my opinion, BlackBerry OS6 will help them get back to where they should be. And for the ultimate messaging phone, BB ftw.

FANBOY FIGHT GO GO GO!
But anyways, as a bystander in this whole thing, I’ve had a BB for 3 years and watched the whole iPhone/Android thing start up. Each side has their fanboys and will continue to, as a new entrant into the fray I’ll be choosing android, both OS’s are excellent, but I don’t like how the iPhone looks or feels, and it’s nice to have a little bit of choice in the handset that I’m getting. I’ll be grabbing a Desire as soon as Telus releases them

Sure I liked the iPhone, but I like the X10 a whole lot more. When push comes to shove, I think more people will look for the lower cost Android devices as their first smartphone choice.

Care to explain what is better about the iPhone than Android, SUPERSTEVEMACGUY? Perhaps not being able to make calls is what you would consider a feature? Android OS’s multitasking is superior (TRUE multitasking, not the lame excuse Apple put out requiring developers to rework apps), Android’s web browser is faster, and Android’s Gmail application isn’t downsyndrome like Apple’s mail app. PS, caps lock didn’t help your argument…

No debate.
There is an issue with te iPhone 4.
The number fixes it.
The antenna actuay works better once fixed
Take all the junk phones as defined what they are worth 72 hrs after you buy them – aka anything with Android on it.
And that leaves you with two options. Blackberry and iPhone
The rest is just junk and you could not sell one for 50% or what you paid for it 72 hrs after you buy it. Apple and RIM still the phones to go to. Bold or IPhone. None else.
Apple still cannot meet demand. Stock price through the roof. Canada is a mere drop in the bucket to what the numbers already show movement is like.
All the rest is just fodder.

@RogersGuy I like the X10 UI, I find it nice and easy to use.
@Ryan Waddell, 1.6 Android until Q3 when it will get 2.1. How about apple and just forsaking the previous years model in favor of making the software run on the current phone? The X10 and most Android phones will be able to upgrade for years, and not see a slow down in speed at all. Yet the iPhone 3G and 3GS have a hard time using the new iOS 4 software. I love my Macbook Pro because at the time it had the best specs and is still really good. But the iPhone 4 has awful specs when compared to phones that launched before it. Buy the phone you really want, and then be prepared to buy a new one next year when they try and play catch up again.

Xperia X10 actually sucks no native multitouch? Sony really screwed up there. Timescape is not as snappy as it should be. Its also running android 1.6 with no specific release date for 2.1. Sometime in Q3 is not good enough. Did I mention no multitouch? The only android device worth mentioning is probably Samsung Galaxy S, the desire is going to be using Sony SLCD so its not worth mentioning.

tony again you didnt do your homework who needs multi-touch when double tapping does the samething , also the reason Sony chose the 1.6 is because it was the most proven and solide OS even 2.1 had bugs when was released.
by the way has anybody forget to mention how overpriced the iphones have been.

The main argument for these iPhone junkies is that there are so many sold. That doesn’t mean very much at all? Just because Apple sold this many in this many hours does NOT make it any better than an android or BB phone. All your comments just make you seem like fanboys. So give up on trying to convince everyone that the iPhone 4 is a superior product when it isn’t.

@omar Im not gonna talk about rooting, but most phones that are out there, except for the original launch devices will get 3.0. Im not a fanboy, as I have had both, but what works for me is the X10 and Android as it does all I need and does it well and quickly. You enjoy the phone your gonna have and ill enjoy mine.
@Tony Please tell me why multi-touch is actually useful and essential for a phone, even when I had my iPhone, I never used multi-touch as I found double tapping to be the best way to zoom.

@Canadianman20 Sure mutli-touch is not essential for a phone, but it is useful for certain apps. Mainly games. The X10 might be a great phone but its lacking a few things that should have been included in the first place. Right now the overall package is better with the Iphone 4 versus the current android devices on carriers. My plan is to get the iphone 4 wait for the 3.o devices with dual core snapdragon. Sell my iphone and get it. Plus side Iphones have high resell value.

@Tony, sure some apps need it, but for ever app that needs multi touch, 10 exists that do the same thing without the need for multi-touch. I cant think of to many apps on the iPhone that need it, save for a few games. But the game apps I like are the simple ones, im not playing an FPS on a cellphone. I like the X10 for its speed and that big vivid screen. Watching a video on that thing is great, and the benifit of having better battery life and the ability to replace the battery are a huge value to me. My biggest complaint about the iPhone after the software was the battery life.

I wouldn’t hold out hope of that X10 getting the 2.1 upgrade in Q3, personally. I have seen *nothing* but complaints from people about Android updates taking forever… I’ll give Apple one thing – they may leave behind their old hardware, but they take a good while to do it. None of my friends running 4.0 on a 3GS have any complaints. And they ALLOW you to upgrade to 4.0 on the 3G (although personally, it was too slow for me).
The problem with Android is that all the carriers and handset makers feel like they have to customize it with their own UI and apps, so every time a new version comes out, they have to update all their customizations. And many, MANY handset makers just don’t bother doing that with a handset that’s older than a year or so, because they have no incentive to do so (they would rather that you buy a new handset). Like really, will Rogers be offering updated versions of Android for the Dream and Magic? I doubt it. With iOS, you don’t have to wait for Rogers to get off their a*s and update their own personal copy of it, all you have to do is connect to iTunes and voila.
Don’t get me wrong – I really, REALLY wish that Android updates worked better, because I absolutely love the OS. I love the way they do notifications and multitasking (although the person who mentioned battery life on Android has clearly not used an EVO 4G yet), and the Android phones are really looking pretty slick these days. But another problem with being stuck up here in Canada is that we are lucky if we get the latest and greatest Android phones within 6 months of their US release. I played around with an X10 a little bit, and personally it wasn’t for me, but if Samsung can bring a non-crippled Galaxy S to Rogers by the time the iPhone 4 launch hysteria dies down, I will definitely be considering it.
Oh, and to whomever made the comment about the 8.1 megapixel camera on the X10 vs the iPhone’s measly 5 megapixel camera… Google “the megapixel myth”. Megapixels are not everything.

Yes, it might be faster than the iphone 3gs which you probably had, but there is actually small transition lag between menus that the iphone 4 probably won’t have.

65K now due to Android 1.6, we will have 16M when 2.1 launches. The iPhone, while the phone that actually started main-stream ownership of smartphones, lost momentum fast. The multitasking in OS4 is actually laughable now that I have used Android multitasking. And the antenna problems are only the beginning, im sure more people will find more problems. Apple has fallen behind, which you think they would not do with a yearly release schedule. But by all means by the phone you want, I have already bought the one I wanted and am loving using it. I hope you feel the same way about your iPhone, once you actually get one.

What I dont understand is the constant comparing and the constant bickering of which is better. I personally have an iPhone 3GS and a Macbook, but I’m not an Apple Fanboy, however I find both products work well and have minimal issues. I’ve used Android and I personally didn’t like it. I found it to be a little confusing and the interface just as bad as Blackberry. We can all say that yes, Apple currently has an issue with the antenna on the iPhone 4, but that isnt going to stop people from buying it. Let’s be honest, the people that comment on these forums make only a maximum of approximately 15% (just guessing) of the entire market, if even, so really, all these fancy things such as open source, multitasking, etc, are not going to be used by the average person.
As far as sales wise, I don’t think its fair to compare as Apple sells 2 phones that operate on the iOS, whereas Android is a mobile platform that a lot of companies had to adopt because they were struggling ex. Motorola. It’s not a fair picture because you only have 1 company selling two phones on Apple iOS and then you have 10 companies selling a minimum of 3 devices on Android. Of course Android would be selling well, it would make sense seeing as there are more options. This is almost like the “fastest network in Canada” business. It’s not fair to compare Bell/Telus network to Roger’s because the amount of clients on both are completely different which again, is an unfair comparison.
Anyways, thats my two cents.

I’m probably going to wait until I get an iphone. The plans from the big 3s are aweful right now and I don’t want to lock myself up for 3 years neither do I want to spend $600 to get an iphone with reception issues. By the time the plan prices come down, there’ll probably be another iphone. So I might just wait until next year.

I bought the nexus one. For one, I can vote in these polls on my phone because I have Flash. I love Android. I have an iPod touch. I had it since launch of them in 07. I got bored of it, it comes down to that. I didn’t want a phone with the same OS. I’m glad I went android. Multitasking is extremely nice, it allows the phone to stay right out of my way.
There are a few quirks that don’t exist on the iPhone. I admit it. They don’t bother me at all. There are a couple apps missing that would be nice. I don’t care about that either.
I know that (especially since I have the N1) I will get all yhr latest updates. Google will iron everything out. If they want to be competitive they have to, and they have told us to watch and see how far Android goes in the next 6 months. I will do that, and be happy as I see the updates and how Android matures. I saw the iPhone OS grow up from 1.0 up until now, and I can certainly say, great changes were made over 3 years. Android will be the same. It just took off later than the iOS did.
